Associate Chief Operating Officer (ACOO)

Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital




Organization Overview


The U-M C.S. The hospital is nationally recognized for excellence in clinical care centers in the United States, the state-of-the-art facility (opened December 2011) enables the organization to fulfill its continued commitment to providing newborns, children and pregnant women with the best health care possible. The hospital includes:


  • 12-story inpatient wing and 9-story outpatient wing
  • 1.1 million square feet
  • 348 beds, including 50 private maternity room and 46 private NICU rooms
  • 16 operating rooms and 2 interventional radiology rooms


We provide comprehensive treatment for patients with normal and high-risk pregnancies, and we expertly address a wide range of gynecologic and women's health concerns, including:

Position Summary


The Associate Chief Operating Officer (ACOO) is an executive-level administrative position at Michigan Medicine with responsibilities serving the Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital (patients, visitors, and caregiving teams). This position reports to the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital (C & W).


The ACOO partners with the Physician and Nursing leaders for overall performance and management of the women’s programs. The primary responsibility for this management position is to provide leadership for strategic, financial, quality and operational priorities across their Interdisciplinary Program.


The ACOO will coordinate these activities with the overall C & W and Michigan Medicine (MM) priorities. The ACOO will provide management and oversight for care delivery, space management, performance management, and clinical, operational, and financial performance. The ACOO is also responsible for oversight and support of operations and C & W Leadership teams from departments aligned to their Interdisciplinary Program.


Key Responsibilities


Fundamental Responsibilities

  • Represent the Women’s Hospital
  • Identify philanthropic opportunities to support the Women’s Hospital
  • Support the Women’s Hospital
  • On committees and other activities ensuring collaboration and liaison with appropriate clinical-enterprise-wide groups
  • Contributes expertise in operational matters to the development of the health system’s strategic plan. Ensures that day to day operations are conducted in full alignment with approved plans.
  • Leadership Triad in determining quality and patient care initiatives and improvements that support organizational priorities
  • Develop and deliver all patient-centered programs and services within the Women’s Hospital


Program & Clinical Management

  • Support communication of clinical performance metrics regularly to faculty and staff
  • Provide oversight for regulatory compliance, as applicable, operations of supporting functions (including identification of areas for improvement)
  • Allocate space and oversee monitoring of space utilization
  • Present on the Women’s Hospital clinical performance metrics to leadership committees
  • Establish priorities, areas of focus, and measurable targets for performance improvement for support services
  • Identify improvements for hospital facilities, including construction or renovation of structures and purchase of major equipment
  • Oversee identification and sharing of clinical best practices to faculty and staff
  • Monitor clinical performance metrics at the interdisciplinary program level and support monitoring of clinical performance metrics at a hospital-wide level


Operational and Financial Management

  • Oversee identification and sharing of operational and financial best practices to faculty and staff
  • Oversee resolution of clinical and operational problems
  • Monitor operational and financial performance metrics at the interdisciplinary program level
  • Oversee approval of the Women’s hospital budget for upcoming year
  • Work with department leadership to secure faculty support for operational and financial performance


Faculty and Staff Performance Management

  • Support performance evaluations with respect to clinic daily operations
  • Oversee recruitment, selection, and evaluation of the Women’s hospital Managers


Essential Functions

  • Provides expertise and consultation as it relates to operations effectiveness, patient access, financial management, employee engagement, and patient satisfaction
  • Directs and leads multiple complex workstreams, including large scale facility, IT, program development, and clinical re-design initiatives
  • Creates alignment with Michigan Medicine and the Women’s hospital strategies and priorities to facilitate administrative and operations management at a local level
  • Works closely with C & W leadership and other ACOOs to provide leadership for strategic, financial, and operational priorities across the enterprise
  • Works collaboratively in a team environment, continually addressing ongoing and new issues, while also exercising appropriate autonomy when needed to meet job requirements
  • Serves as a key member of the Interdisciplinary Program Oversight Team


Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated skill in change management
  • Proven experience managing in complex organizations
  • Confident with the ability to convey vision
  • Credible, assertive, self-motivated administrator
  • Master’s degree in health services administration or business administration or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • At least five years of progressively responsible experience and proven success in the management of health care delivery and a history of successful execution of initiatives in operations or physician practice management Considerable health care experience and strong experience in managing clinical operations
  • Skilled at data management and analytics
  • Considerable knowledge of management principles, practices, and methods
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, as demonstrated by the ability to work effectively with administrative partners, individuals, and/or teams, across disciplines
