Major Responsibilities
DEPARTMENT PROFILE (or DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW ): The Literacy Department at SUNY Cortland envisions a world where literacy is leveraged for equity and social justice. The department offers a graduate degree program in Literacy Education (M.S. Ed.) leading to professional literacy specialist certification B-6 and 5-12 in one fully-online program. Through coursework and mentored field experiences, candidates learn to utilize multiple theories of literacy as a tool for equity and justice, approach their instruction and assessment as critical reflective practitioners, and advocate for and practice culturally sustaining pedagogies. Additionally, the department collaborates with undergraduate teacher preparation programs across the college to offer literacy coursework for their majors. Through this collaboration, department faculty prepare hundreds of undergraduate teacher education candidates to view literacy across a multitude of contexts and to strive to become educators that embrace the diverse nature of every classroom of learners.
Responsibilities
Teaching
Prepare and teach undergraduate and graduate literacy courses in both face-to-face and online environments within the following areas of specialization: early literacy; evidence-based and theoretically-supported literacy instruction; methods of literacy instruction for special populations including multilingual learners, students with disabilities, and students who need increased literacy instructional support; methods of literacy assessment; assessment and instruction of writing; literacy policy; digital literacy; and the theoretical models and processes of literacy instruction.
Scholarship/Research
Develop, engage in, and maintain an active and productive research agenda.
Service
Provide service to the department, school, university, community, and profession.
Job Requirements
  • Creativity in course and curricular design;
  • Skills and experiences in partnering with P-12 schools and practitioners;
  • Ability to develop and maintain an active and productive research agenda (e.g. conference presentations, peer-reviewed publications, book reviews, etc.)
  • Knowledge of culturally responsive literacy instruction, writing instruction and assessment, literacy instruction at the elementary level including supporting multilingual learners, literacy instruction at the secondary level including supporting multilingual learners, or theoretical models and processes of literacy instruction from emergent literacy through adulthood;
  • Cultural competence and commitment to promoting diversity and Inclusion as part of anticipated career trajectory;
  • Ability to develop and teach undergraduate and graduate literacy courses in both face-to-face and online environments:
  • Ability to engage in a variety of professional service activities (e.g. committee work, faculty governance, school-university partnerships, etc.)
  • Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills necessary for working collaboratively with a diverse community of students, faculty, staff, and external constituents.
Functional and Supervisory Relationships
  • Reports to the academic department chair
  • Works closely with department faculty and staff
  • Works under the supervision of the dean
  • Develops relationships with faculty and staff in other departments and divisions
Required Qualifications
  • Experience related to addressing the literacy needs of all children, including those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
  • An earned doctorate in Literacy Education or a related field. Doctoral candidates who are all but dissertation ( ABD ) may be considered with a definite finish date within the first year of appointment confirmed by letter from the dissertation chair.
  • Evidence of scholarly activity, including research-based publications and/or presentations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting students who need increased literacy instructional support
  • At least three years teaching experience in P-12 schools including the teaching of reading
  • Evidence of effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Evidence that demonstrates operational knowledge and use of effective literacy instructional practices
  • Experience working on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives
  • Experience with online teaching and learning
  • Expertise in early literacy development and instruction
  • Experience working with colleagues and P-12 teachers to promote literacy education
  • Evidence of engagement in professional leadership activities
