The Assistant Manager Clinical Nutrition assists the Director in the oversight of the day to day operations of Lucile Packard Children's Hospital's Clinical Nutrition Department and serves as a role model, resource, and leader for the Clinical Dietitians. The Assistant Manager Clinical Nutrition is responsible for both clinical/patient care responsibilities and administrative/operational responsibilities. Collaborates with director on quality improvement projects and integrates results into evidence based practices. Reviews and updates policies and procedures. Manages the work schedule for both inpatient and outpatient areas. Facilitates human resource functions including recruiting, hiring, training, mentoring, precepting interns, handling conflict resolution and corrective action.

Essential Functions

Must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Service Standards of the Hospital(s).

  • Manages day-to-day operations of the unit. Reviews task, schedules clinical nutrition staff according to patient/client needs and budget allocation, sets priorities and revises workflow to effectively facilitate customer and departmental needs. Directs the provision of medical nutrition therapy and the nutrition care process by managing the activities of clinical dietitians, dietetic technicians, and clerical staff including nutrition screening, assessment, diagnosis, intervention, monitoring and evaluation, education, and menu processing according to established departmental policies.

  • Performs supervisory functions by interviewing, selecting and providing training for new staff; by approving or disapproving recommendations from subordinate staff on personnel actions; by evaluating subordinates' performance; by hearing and resolving employee grievances; and by determining the need for and initiating disciplinary action in order to ensure adequate and competent staffing for the agency, program, division or institution.
  • Assists with design, implementation, evaluation, and creation/updating of nutrition care policies and procedures to achieve improved patient outcomes and cost containment. Monitors and integrates technological advances that enhance efficiency as appropriate.
  • Develops, initiates, and monitors quality initiatives and patient safety practices in accordance with the Joint Commission and other accrediting organizations. Assists in achieving compliance with regulatory agency standards, including state and federal standards.
  • Evaluates nutrition care protocols using principles of evidence-based practice to establish and/or improve nutrition practice guidelines. Mentors department staff in presenting and/or publishing articles, abstracts, or results of research studies in professional journals or at professional meetings.

  • Serves as a resource to medical staff and allied health personnel on nutrition issues.

  • Maintains cost control procedures, adhering to budget constraints while ensuring quality service.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.

Education: Bachelor's degree in clinical nutrition, food and nutrition, or a work-related discipline/field from an accredited college or university. Completion of a didactic program in dietetics and supervised practice program approved by the Accreditation Council for Education and Dietetics (ACEND) - formerly known as the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education - CADE).

Experience: Five (5) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience.

License/Certification: RD/RDN (Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist) - Valid credential as a Registered Dietitian / Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RD) issued by the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics' Commission on Dietetic Registration.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

These are the observable and measurable attributes and skills required to perform successfully the essential functions of the job and are generally demonstrated through qualifying experience, education, or licensure/certification.

  • Knowledge of the Nutrition Care Process as it relates to the needs of complex pediatric patient populations and acutely ill patients/clients and ability to apply all steps of the process.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and application of nutrition services and medical nutrition therapy in pediatric patients, especially in a specialty area/areas.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and advanced priority-setting skills.
  • General knowledge of electronic medical record, nutrient analysis, word processing, and spreadsheet software.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written, verbal and electronic form to patients, public, hospital/clinic and medical staff, and physicians.
  • Ability to budget, make financial projections and write reports
  • Ability to supervise, coach, mentor, train, and evaluate work results
  • Strong interpersonal skills to establish productive working relationships with multidisciplinary team and support services.

Pay Range

Compensation is based on the level and requirements of the role.

Salary within our ranges may also be determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, location, and abilities, as required by the role, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.

Typically, new team members join at the minimum to mid salary range.

Minimum to Midpoint Range (1.0 FTE): $113,880.00 to $134,534.40
