Summary
- Serves as the Division of Student Experience leads on Orientation, Graduation, and other campuswide events while partnering with the Campus Life Coordinators on logistics related to those and other Institute-wide efforts in supporting students.
- Supervise graduate and undergraduate student staff, collectively responsible for advancing the student experience at CalArts. This specifically includes managing any faculty and staff involvement accountable for the Student Union and all registered student organizations.
- Expand and improve the Institutes' commitment to high-quality curricular and co-curricular activities.
- Assists in directing the work of the Campus Life Coordinators and provides mentorship to the coordinators when appropriate.
- Serve as the primary budget administrator for Student Union, the Basic Needs Center, and student organization budgets. Work with professional staff and student leadership to maintain sound fiscal practices.
- Compile, analyze, and distribute student leadership and involvement statistics, database information, and comprehensive reports.
- Advise the Institute on federal regulations and compliance, national best practices, and advancements about the needs and interests of the student community.
- Develops budget recommendations for both the Institute's annual Orientation and Graduation events.
- Perform ongoing program assessment for Student Leadership & Development. Collect and analyze data, prepare and write reports for evaluation and new program proposals. Prepare weekly, and monthly activity reports, including student participation and evaluations.
- Develop and implement student leadership programs. Expand and improve the Institute’s commitment to leadership opportunities and high-quality co-curricular activities.
- Actively participate in producing campus-wide programs, events, special projects, and weekend activities. Promote full participation of a diverse student population in all involvement opportunities within student life. Work collaboratively with the Division of Student Experience staff to develop joint student programming.
- Complete other duties as assigned by the Student Experience leadership team.
- Serve on Student Experience and Institute-wide Committees. Represent CalArts within professional associations and organizations. Attend relevant conferences or training programs to remain on the cutting edge in the field. Serve as a resource and referral agent for students, their families, faculty, staff, and the community.
- Supervise, in partnership with the Major Events Coordinator, all events and programs sponsored by Student Union, such as social events, concerts, speakers, performers, rallies, forums, dances, and special events.
- Cultivate and maintain positive and active working relationships with all campus and community partners. Work collaboratively with Advisors for all student organizations on campus.
- Serve as a primary advisor responsible for the oversight, advisement, and advancement of the Student Union and its Executive Board, committees, and programmatic efforts.
- Supervise all aspects of advising and training the Student Union Leadership Team members and body.
- Supervise all fiscal affairs of the Student Union, including budgeting, approval of expenditures, and the reconciliation of operating budgets. Train and advise any financial officers or committees of the Student Union.
- Supervise the Student Coordinator and student staff responsible for running the operations of the Basic Needs Center and leading educational workshops.
- Collaborate with campus and community partners to acquire internal and external monetary and in-kind donations for the Basic Needs Center.
- Facilitate training to ensure the success of the student development of the Basic Needs Center student workers.
- Manage the daily operations and all logistics of the Basic Needs Center and co-lead the Basic Needs Center Taskforce to discuss student needs, implement changes, and long-term strategic planning for the Basic Needs Center.
- Highly developed organizational and leadership skills.
- Communicate and employ interpersonal actions that model high professional, responsible, accountable, and ethical standards.
- Demonstrate a commitment to outstanding customer service and student development.
- Demonstrated knowledge in student government, social change models, leadership development, student development, program coordination, student leader advisement, conflict management, mediation, group dynamics, assessment, and fiscal management.
- Ability to work weeknight and weekend hours.
- Exemplary communication skills (both written and oral) evidenced by a background in preparing comprehensive reports and summaries incorporating data, assessment, and historical information.
- A bachelor’s degree required
- A master’s degree in student development, higher education, or a related field or equivalent experience preferred
- The incumbent will be expected to continue upgrading the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to keep abreast of regulation/policy changes
- Minimum two years of program direction, staff supervision, and student advisement experience in progressively responsible positions.
