Position Description

Advertised Job Summary
The Assistant Director for Early Intervention contributes to Substance Abuse Prevention and Education’s vision – of a safe Carolina community where students’ academic and personal success is not impaired by substance use – by way of theBASICSprogram, which provides early intervention and referral services to students engaged in high-risk substance use behaviors. The Assistant Director for Early Intervention is responsible for direction and supervision for the delivery of the brief motivational interviewing intervention, the development of their student workforce, and collaboration with campus and community partners in student wellbeing.
  • Track program outcomes. Generate reports of student behavior survey responses, which contribute to assessment of program effectiveness.
  • Oversee delivery of theBASICSprogram implemented by graduate student interns. Implementation includes, but is not limited to, receiving referrals, scheduling appointments, conductingBASICSsessions, documenting case progress, and providing follow-up as needed.
  • Provide, as necessary, brief motivational interviewing intervention and referral services to a limited caseload of high-risk students.
  • Serve as a liaison between theSAPEOffice, Student Conduct, Student Care and Outreach Team, Counseling and Psychiatry, Title IX, and other campus and community offices as necessary to provide continuity of care.
  • Recruit and supervise graduate student interns, including coordinating training and ongoing professional development. Evaluate best practices and make recommendations to best address high-risk student behavior and students of concern.

Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree and 1 year of related experience.


Preferred Qualifications
Masters in Social Work, Public Health, Counseling, Higher Education or related field
Experience using Motivational Interviewing
Experience with brief screening and intervention strategies (e.g. BASICS)
Experience in higher education setting, or working with young adults

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Knowledge of alcohol and other drug prevention theory, current research and evaluation practices.
Experience using Motivational Interviewing.
