About Us:

The Department of Equity and Inclusion at the City of Raleigh is dedicated to creating a diverse, inclusive, and accessible community for all residents. We strive to eliminate barriers and promote equity in all aspects of city programs, services, activities, and initiatives. As the Assistant Director of Equity and Inclusion, you will work closely with the Executive Director to uphold and fulfill the department's core responsibilities to the City Manager, City Council, and the City of Raleigh organization.


Job Summary:

As the Assistant Director of Equity and Inclusion, your primary purpose is to oversee the operations of the department, providing strategic guidance and administrative oversight. You will coordinate and oversee the implementation of DEI programs and activities, ensuring that they align with the city's strategic plan, mission, and vision. Your role will involve handling complex and sensitive issues, providing technical guidance, and creating and implementing initiatives and solutions to promote equity and inclusion. Additionally, you will champion CORE Team efforts to develop and implement targeted Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (EIB) strategies.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned to contribute to the overall success of the department and the city's commitment to equity and inclusion.
  • Champion CORE Team efforts to develop and implement targeted EIB strategies, ensuring a focus on achieving equity and inclusion goals.
  • Plan, manage, and administer the operations of the Department of Equity and Inclusion, ensuring alignment with the city's strategic plans and mission.
  • Partner with the Executive Director in crafting the direction, projects and priorities of the Department of Equity and Inclusion
  • Serve as a department representative and advisor to management, City officials, boards, commissions, authorities, outside agencies, the public, and other organizations on matters related to equity and inclusion.
  • Supervise staff, conduct performance evaluations, and implement hiring, discipline, and termination procedures to foster an inclusive and high-performing team.
  • Develop and deliver presentations and oversee the preparation and distribution of communication materials, including reports and documents related to DEI initiatives.
  • Oversee and participate in the analysis, development, and administration of the department's budget, ensuring compliance and recommending adjustments.
  • Supervise staff, including conducting performance evaluations, implementing hiring processes, and managing discipline and termination procedures.
  • Assist the Executive Director with the management and oversight of internal and external diversity initiatives, including working with all units within the department to promote diversity
  • Guide, review, and approve work provided by staff, contractors, and internal and external stakeholders, optimizing resources and delivering high-quality services.
  • Oversee the implementation of the DEI Business Plan


Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's Degree in public administration or field directly related to assignment and eight years of progressively responsible related experience that includes significant management and supervisory experience.

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
