SUMMARY

Under general supervision, assists the Athletic Director in the administration, development and improvement in MPS sponsored athletic prorams at the high school and middle school levels.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assist the District Athletic Department by commuting to off-campus locations to supervise athletic events.
  • Attend Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) meetings to provide educational insight into the role of Athletic Directors across the state of Minnesota.
  • Assist the District Athletic Department to successfully provide athletes with proper equipment and facilities for competition.
  • Assist the District Athletic Department to schedule events for high schools and middle schools.
  • Assist the District Athletic Department by providing a channel through which students and the community may express their concerns about an athletic program.
  • Assist the District Athletic Department in monitoring budget, while making budget recommendations within assigned area.
  • Assist the District Athletic Department to ensure district adherence to all MSHSL and district policies, administrative rules, and codes relating to participation in athletics.
  • Support the relationship between MPS and the community by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with students, clients, visitors, and MPS staff; enthusiastically promotes the Superintendent’s goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures. Maintain absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, records and MPS information; performs related duties as required or assigned
  • Assist the District Athletic Department with transportation and scheduling all athletic departure times and provide bus supervision with trip sheets.
  • Assist the District Athletic Department by updating the Athletic website and social media outlets to provide updated and consistent information.
  • Assist the District Athletic Department to effectively execute the listed events on the master sports calendar for games/events.
  • Assist the District Athletic Department in managing the high school and middle school athletic programs as needed.
  • Assist the District Athletic Department in administering the school athletic code in a fair and consistent manner that is within the intent of the code.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines

Bachelor’s degree in Athletic or Recreational Administration, Sports Management or related field; AND three (3) years of experience as a coach or athletic director in an educational environment; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.


Knowledge of:
  • Principles and practices of public sector administrative management, including records management, finance, budgeting, purchasing, contract management, customer service and employee supervision.
  • Legal liabilities and responsibilities for athletic program staff.
  • Federal, state and local laws, ordinances, policies, rules and regulations governing the conduct and safety of athletics programs and recreational facilities in an educational environment.
  • Purpose, use and benefits of athletics and recreation programs and activities.
  • Training and coaching techniques for individual sports.
  • Rules and regulations of the Minnesota State High School League and other governing agencies.


Skill in:

  • Managing and coordinating sports and athletic support programs.
  • Identifying problems and opportunities, and developing solutions.
  • Promoting a positive sports and recreation environment and good personal behavior.
  • Using initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines.
  • Providing effective customer service, and dealing tactfully and courteously with the public.
  • Managing staff, delegating tasks and authority, and coaching to improve staff performance.
  • Collaborating as a team member, with colleagues, staff and community representatives.
  • Effective verbal and written communication.
  • Interpreting and applying educational and athletic policies and standards.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers, parents, booster clubs and community organizations.
  • Teaching effective sports skills classes and providing individual instruction.
  • Using courtesy and respect in interactions with students, athletes and parents.
  • Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands.
  • Promoting and enforcing safety standards and practices.


LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.

A valid Minnesota State Driver’s License may be required.

Certified Athletic Administrators (CAA) Certificate

Specific technical training and certification may be required.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a standard office environment which requires occasionally lifting such articles as file boxes or heavier materials with help from others and/or lifting and carrying light objects frequently. A job in this category may require walking or standing to a significant degree or may involve sitting most of the time with long periods of computer work and heavy phone usage.
