Job Description
Serves as a member of the Curatorial team, working in close collaboration with the Collections department in order to support activities related to the collection of works stewarded by the Fine Arts Center Museum. The Museum cares for approximately 17,000 works of art and material culture composed primarily of Native American (Pueblo, Plains, Plateau, and Great Basin cultures), Hispanic and Spanish Colonial, and 20th and 21st Century American art. The position supports research, development, and implementation of collections-based rotations, installations, and exhibitions working with both internal staff and guest curators. The position also plays an important role supporting collections-based academic engagement for Colorado College students and faculty.

Anticipated Salary Range: $45,760 to $57,123 per year

Responsibilities:
  • Support collections-based public engagement.
  • Participate in the development of new collections care and data management practices.
  • Propose strategic acquisitions to complement and strengthen the permanent collection holdings.
  • Partner with the Museum Education Manager to support collections-based academic engagement, which includes pulling artworks for course visits, supporting faculty research, and facilitating storage and gallery-based educational experiences.
  • Assist with production of materials for interpretation, education, development, and marketing/communications staff.
  • As requested, purchase supplies and assist with tracking expenses.
  • Assist with object condition reporting and artwork installation as requested.
  • Build and deepen relationships with and support visits by artists, curators, scholars, Tribal Nation representatives, descendent community menbers, and other collaborators. Prepare collections and archival materials, book travel and lodging arrangements for visitors, and assist with meeting and event planning.
  • Conceive, propose, plan, and deliver ambitious, rigorous, and thought-provoking art exhibitions from the permanent collection; develop budget estimates; coordinate exhibition production with other personnel; assemble data and photographs; prepare labels and interpretative materials, research and write catalogues and brochures, conduct select tours, training/educational sessions, and public programs such as artist talks and exhibition opening events.
  • Help conceive and support an upcoming reinstallation of the permanent collection planned to open in September 2024. Conduct collections and archive-based research as well as support the logistics of project development.
  • Collaborate effectively with staff and departments in Museum, FAC, and College, including interns and student workers.
  • Contribute to social media program and preparation of materials for publicity and promotion.
  • Support ongoing collections care efforts including inventory, maintaining and updating museum records, and Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) initiatives.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelors degree with focus in Art/Art History, Museum Studies, Indigenous Studies, or related disciplines; excellent writing and research skills; highly organized, flexible and comfortable with diverse audiences; outstanding interpersonal, computer, and communication skills; ability to communicate effectively and develop positive relationships with people from different cultural backgrounds; excellent attention to detail and ability to establish priorities and work independently; intellectually adventurous with a strong ability to effectively collaborate with a small professional staff, students, and faculty.

Preferred Qualifications:
Masters degree and major work in Art/Art History, Museum Studies, Indigenous Studies, or related disciplines; Demonstrated expertise in one of the major collecting areas: Indigenous Art, Spanish Colonial Art, or 20th century Regional Art; experience in a museum environment, including basic art handling experience; some knowledge in the areas of artwork and items in the Museums care ; experience with database systems including The Museum System.
