Job Description
  • Interacts with Foundation conservators regarding preservation of the household accessories collection. Executes conservation treatment requests; assists with establishment of priorities and participates in discussions about proposed treatments.
  • Assists with the proper documentation of each historic interior, including the development of appropriate written furnishing plans and photographic data, for each historic interior project. Assists with designing and implementing seasonal changes in the exhibition sites and table designs based on period documentation.
  • Develops a growing knowledge of the household accessories and musical instrument collection, including but not limited to period production methods, materials, national and regional structural and ornamental traits, and authorship.
  • Undertakes other tasks and assignments as appropriate
  • Assists with training for interpreters, museum docents, other public contact staff, and special interest groups as required.
  • Assists with the organization and maintenance of proper storage of the props and reproductions used in historic interiors and for museum theatre programming.
  • Supervises the work of interns and volunteers as required.
  • Assists with Architectural Preservation & Research projects in the historic area including annual preventive maintenance closing schedules for the exhibition buildings; assists with coordination/communication of scheduled work with curatorial and conservation staff.
  • Locates sources and/or commissions high-quality authentic reproduction objects for use by historic area staff, special programs, and stage productions.
  • Assists Products Division personnel in the selection of artifact prototypes from the household accessories collections; assists as needed with development for the retail program.
  • Assists with the care and management of the collections. Assists with organization and maintenance of proper storage of the household accessories and musical instruments.
  • Assists with development of storylines, labeling, and object content for exhibitions at the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg based on thematic considerations; assists with exhibition installations.
  • Assists with the coordination and supervision of film crews during historic area film shoots to ensure the preservation of historic area buildings, collections, and resources.
  • Learns to produce and deliver high quality public presentations such as illustrated lectures, workshops, and special tours of the Art Museums and exhibitions buildings.
  • Ensures that assigned objects in the household accessories collection are properly documented, including the development of appropriate written and photographic data for the creation of a full catalogue record; participates in the release of such information to the Foundation’s online catalogue in a timely fashion.
