Job Description
Join the hundreds of talented and innovative team members who are making an impact every day at California Times, incorporating Los Angeles Times and San Diego Union-Tribune, two of the most iconic media brands in the nation. Whether you love to tell compelling stories or want to drive our award-winning powerhouse in new directions, the Los Angeles Times team is the place to be.
Summary
The Los Angeles Times is seeking an ambitious, imaginative and collaborative art director to join its award-winning creative department. We’re looking for someone who can assist in designing layouts for our glossy entertainment magazine, The Envelope, and other sections as needed. The best candidates will be excited to challenge the existing rules of magazine design. We want weird ideas and big thoughts – and to make something that truly reflects the creativity of Los Angeles and the people who live here.
We are looking for someone who has experience in editorial magazine design. You will be a key player in evolving The Envelope brand, ensuring visual consistency across print and digital channels. If you love collaborative brainstorming and have the hands-on design and production skills to execute big ideas, we’d love to hear from you.
In this position, you will:
  • Create and maintain organizational documents
  • Design and art-direct for latimes.com and social channels as needed
  • Coordinate projects for both digital and print
  • Develop and maintain the style manual in conjunction with design directors
  • Design and art direct features and inside pages for glossy magazine printing weekly
  • Continue to grow our database of illustrators and photographers, with a focus on finding L.A.-based contributors
  • Commission illustrators and photographers
  • Art-direct photo shoots in fashion, style, still life and portraits
Requirements:
  • A history of designing and developing alternate story forms
  • Effective at working in a team environment
  • At least seven years of professional experience in magazine design
  • Strong multitasking, organizational and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to design for digital stories and social media
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • A portfolio of work that demonstrates excellence in art-directing illustrations, typography and photography as well as experience working on photo shoots
  • Strong working knowledge of design software such as CCI Newsgate, InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator
This full-time, temporary position is expected to last nine months and might include occasional night and weekend work. Candidates who live outside the Los Angeles area are encouraged to apply; moving to the area is not a requirement for this position. #LI-Remote
