Job Description

Vagabond Missions Area Director serves as the principal leader of Vagabond Missions in each city Vagabond Missions serves. We aim for each mission to be a unique inculturation of the Gospel and Vagabond Missions in the local community. We believe God is calling people to a mission, a particular place, and a specific group of people. Each Area Director is working to ensure that every inner-city teenager in their city is afforded a life-changing encounter with Jesus through the Incarnational ministry of Vagabond Missions.


Area Directors are motivated to see the Gospel shared in the city they serve by equipping and discipling missionaries, volunteers, local committees, and mission partners to engage in the mission. They assist development in the local area by discovering, cultivating, and stewarding donors.


Reports To: Director of Mission

Number of staff supervised: 3 - 12

Number of missions/ministries: One to four

Departments/Job Titles Supervised: Team Leads and Missionaries

Requirements:

● Ministry Veteran with5+ yearsexperience in youth ministry or mission work

● Proven leadership skills.

● Proven relational skills with both kids and adults.

● A call to reach kids with the Gospel.

● Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.

● Ability to maintain confidentiality.

● Minimum 3-5 year commitment to the position is desired


Responsibilities:


Mission/Authority

Through spiritual leadership and proper management, lead in developing a team in the area to carry out Vagabond’s Missions of introducing inner-city kids to Jesus Christ and helping them grow as disciples in the Catholic Church. The Area Director is responsible for managing the local ministry, growing current mission operations and expanding to new local areas as discerned with the leadership team of Vagabond Missions.

Ministry Functions:

Spiritual Development — Lives out the Vagabond Missions rule of life in an exemplary way.

● Develop a yearly personal growth plan that fosters a vibrant spiritual life, including time for monthly spiritual direction, daily Mass, Eucharistic Adoration, Confession, solitude, retreat, reflection, prayer, and scripture.

● Seek and maintain relationships in the context of active participation in a parish community.

● Actively participate in the spiritual life of the Vagabond Mission community.

● Lead teams and individuals in spiritual development.

● Ensure that all ministry in the area takes place out of the overflow of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and is designed and carried out with a dependence on prayer and the Sacraments.


Leadership Development — “Equipping leaders, committee, and staff” includes key volunteer care, recruiting, team building and training, supervision and vision casting.

● Partner with the National Leadership team, Director of Mission, missionaries and the local committee to cast vision for reaching kids within the defined area.

● Develop younger missionaries in the area by providing local support and advocacy.

● Develop consistent gatherings with committee, leaders and staff to build unity and provide vision and direction.

● Create a spiritual leadership plan for volunteer leaders, staff and committee members in the area.

● Recruit and train new leaders to build leadership teams that reflect the community and its needs.

● Work with the Director of Ministry and the Ministry Team in local training of new missionaries.

● Supervise and develop missionaries, providing resources and experiences needed to implement the vision.

● Model excellence in contact work, breakout, worship nights, and retreats to other leaders.

● Train leaders, team leads, and committee on how to work effectively in teams and develop a yearly ministry strategy.


Fundraising Development — includes events, major donor care, and marketing in the local area.

● Provide leadership to the area committee in finding partners to own the area vision and budget.

● Work with the Finance team to assess and set a budget. Work with to Development Director to ensure commitments in the local area cover budget.

● Develop and lead the area’s fundraising strategy and ensure excellence in communication to donors.

● Raise the necessary funds to carry out the ministry vision for the local area, keeping the area consistently in surplus inclusive of their salary.

● Build the Vagabond Missions brand via local marketing as an excellent tool for working with teens in the area.

● Coordinate and conduct quality events that reflect Vagabond Missions’ capacity to impact

kids and warrant the investment of a participant’s personal and corporate resources.


Direct Ministry — “Proclaiming and modeling” includes contact work, Breakout, Worship Nights

and retreats.

● Work to actively engage in contact work.

● Oversee, lead or manage Vagabond Missions programming with excellence.

● Develop and implement ongoing plans to maximize Gospel proclamation through retreat opportunities.


Ministry Support — “Taking care of business” includes accounting, administration, communication (internal), data management and strategic plan.

● Adhere to all Vagabond Missions’ policies and procedures and maintain professionalism concerning office hours, conduct and time management.

● Manage and oversee local leases, utilities and bills for the local missionary community.

● Manage finances with stewardship, accountability and transparency.

● Maintain accurate information on kids, leaders and donors for area records.

● Provide clear, prompt, appropriate and professional communication to everyone involved in ministry.

● Set yearly strategic ministry plans and initiatives to reach kids; review them on a regular basis.

● Perform other duties as assigned and congruent with gifts, experience and area needs.

● Accept both short and long-term assignments of projects.

Training/Personal Growth:

● Participation in all staff training/retreats twice a year.

● Participation in additional training or experiences if deemed necessary.

● Participate in programs designed for personal spiritual maturity or personal enrichment.


Salary, Benefits, etc.:

● Work a 40-hour work week with a set but flexible schedule, ie. 8 am – 5 pm, 9 am – 6 pm, etc.

● All Vagabond Missions employees are responsible for raising the necessary funding to be able to accomplish the purpose of the position upon completion of their fundraising training.

● Health, Dental, and Vision Insurance

● 15 days of vacation in year one, along with 10 days off between Christmas and New Years.

● Monthly spiritual day.

● Expected to live out rule of life for Vagabond Missions.

● Occasional traveling is needed as per job requirements.
