Job Description

Summary

As a Analytical Chemist – Elemental Analysis in the Materials Characterization Lab, you will work in the Elemental Analysis Laboratory with an energized team of scientists to execute research projects using a variety of analytical techniques for composition analysis of GE materials, including but not limited to metals, ceramics, composites, polymers, and biological samples. You will work independently and with project teams to develop methods and deliver results to move research projects forward.

You will:

  • Work closely with researchers to define analysis goals and execute analysis of a variety of materials that may include metals, high temperature alloys, superalloys, ceramics, thermal/environmental barrier coatings, ceramic matrix composites, polymers, and biological specimens.
  • Interact and collaborate with materials scientists and materials development teams across GE to understand analysis requests, independently identify modes of characterizing materials that best meet project needs, and guide specialists to execute and report out data.
  • Reduce data to useful formats using appropriate tools.
  • Foster a multidisciplinary and inclusive team environment.
  • Develop and validate preparation and analysis methods for new materials or for new elements in existing materials.
  • Calibrate, maintain, and operate multiple pieces of equipment necessary to conduct experiments.
  • Maintain accurate records of the work performed and other records required by the projects.
  • Share project progress through oral presentations and written reports.
  • Perform all work in accordance with environmental health and safety guidelines.
  • Present technical work both internally and externally.

Qualifications:

  • BS or BA in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Material Science or other chemistry-related discipline and a minimum of 7 years relevant experience (post-bachelor’s degree).
  • Extensive hands-on experience in wet chemistry, sample preparation and familiarity with general chemical laboratory practices.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.
  • Ability to work independently and across all functions/levels as part of a team advising the team on best elemental analysis approaches to achieve desired results and presenting results.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage sample queue, and perform multiple, concurrent tasks.
  • Excellent attention to detail in laboratory work, data reduction, documentation, and presentation.
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership and written and verbal communication skills in a diverse, global team environment.
  • Ability to perform a wide range of sample preparation methods for elemental analysis such as open vessel digestions, microwave digestion, fusion, and ashing.
  • Demonstrated instrumentation skill and hands-on experience in ICP-OES, ICP-MS, Laser Ablation.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office products like Excel and Powerpoint.
  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY
  • Must be 18 years or older.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Experience in other characterization techniques such as ion chromatography, X-Ray Fluorescence, LECO elemental analyzer, acid/base and other types of titrations, Karl Fischer Titrations.
  • Experience in data analysis software and computer interfacing to analytical instrumentation.
  • Experience with data reduction algorithms and post-processing.
  • Working knowledge of statistics.
  • MS in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Materials Science, or other Chemistry-related discipline and 7+ years relevant experience.
  • Experience writing government proposals.
