Job Description

Division: Finance & Administration

Location: Brooklyn, NY

Reports To: Director, Finance

Status: Full-Time, Regular, Non-union

Salary: $60,000 - $65,000

THE ROLE

The Analyst, Finance & Accounting performs a wide variety of essential financial management and reporting duties for their portfolio of grants and department budgets under the supervision of the Director, Finance. Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to the preparation of budgets to actual reports, developing department and project budgets, financial analysis, and forecasting. In addition, the Analyst will assist in preparing StoryCorps’ department budget reports and provide support to the department staff in understanding them.

The Analyst will develop a firm grasp of their portfolio and StoryCorps' overall program operations to be able to effectively respond to questions on budgets, grants, and other financial matters. The Analyst must be able to work independently and within inter-departmental teams.


WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Responsible for accurate and timely recording of revenue for the organization, including reconciling such amounts along with restricted net assets and deferred revenue, with Development and other revenue-generating departments.
  • Prepare and distribute budget reports to department managers and senior management, analyze significant variances from the budget, and identify potential cost savings.
  • Analyze costs and provide financial decision support for earned-income engagements.
  • Assist the Director, Finance in managing the annual organizational budget process, including coordinating and collaborating with department directors in developing departmental budgets; collates information for presentation to senior management; uploads and manages budget information in the financial system.
  • Work closely with the Program and Development staff in your portfolio to develop project and grant budgets, and prepare periodic financial reports for grants.
  • Perform other duties to support the Finance department as assigned.
  • Work directly with department directors, and other staff responding to ad hoc requests for financial information and analyses.
  • Provide schedules and other supporting documentation to the auditors in connection with the annual audit and preparation of Form 990.



QUALIFICATIONS

Required skills:

  • You have integrity, sensitivity, and discretion in dealing with confidential financial information
  • You have advanced proficiency with Excel
  • Cultural competence/humility and the ability to thrive in a diverse working environment
  • You’re flexible and adaptable- we move quickly at StoryCorps and need solution-oriented problem solvers to help move our work forward
  • You have strong organizational skills and multitasking abilities, and excellent attention to detail
  • You have a minimum of 2-3 years of experience in finance and accounting
  • You have a bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience
  • You are able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing or in person



Preferred skills

  • You are familiar with mainstream web based financial ledger systems
  • You have worked in both Mac and Google systems
  • You have experience in a nonprofit organization
  • You have experience with ADP, Asana, Salesforce and Concur systems



Physical Requirements:

  • Travel 2-3 times a week

In-Office Work:

Working at the StoryCorps office is optional except in certain circumstances, such as in-person training, if your position requires some in-office presence, or if your manager needs an in-person individual or team meeting, COVID guidelines permitting.

For those who prefer to work in the office, that option remains.
