We have an exciting opportunity for an Altitude Test Technician I to join our team with the Facilities and Testing Division.
This is a JETS II CBA position with Jacobs.
The Altitude Test Technician I will:
- Perform testing and leak checking of vacuum and pressure systems and hardware.
- Assist with the testing, calibration, adjustment, repair, and set up of test or research oriented equipment or experiments.
- Notify Supervisor and Management of any hazards in the workplace and advise on appropriate corrective actions.
- Assist more experienced technicians in the performance of work duties.
- Perform duties as inside or outside lock observer on manned tests at altitude, serving on test duty stations responsible for performing emergency actions and evacuation of test personnel in the event of an emergency during testing.
- Train on and learn the methods of egress of all pressure suits worn by test subjects or astronauts undergoing training.
- Perform related duties as required.
- Execute all work duties in a skilled, safe, and technically acceptable manner.
- Operate appropriate shop mechanical equipment, systems, and tools in the performance of work duties.
- Clean hardware and components to the appropriate level prior to, during, and after assembly using established procedures and specifications.
- Perform quality work in the development, fabrication, setup, operation, and maintenance of fixtures, equipment, and facilities related to manned and unmanned altitude chamber testing.
- Cut, flare, thread, and bend tubing and pipe in the assembly of both high and low pressure liquid, vapor, and gas systems.
- Maintain data records, training records, and other records pertaining to the mechanical and operational function of ground support equipment as well as test chamber hardware, equipment, and systems.
- Execute all assigned tasks with technical guidance and/or supervision from higher level technicians, engineers, or supervisor.
- Assist in the buildup and operation of complex mechanical systems and equipment including, but not limited to, pressure (liquid/vapor/gas), vacuum, and cryogenic systems in support of the altitude chamber test facilities.
- Work shifts assigned to duty stations as a test system operator or trainee under guidance/supervision of a certified technician or competent engineer during manned and unmanned chamber testing.
- Wear and utilize appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and clothing during performance of work duties, to include safety glasses/goggles, hard hats, gloves, masks, respirators, coveralls, harnesses, etc.
- Maintain equipment as necessary, including preventive maintenance and repairs or replacement of parts.
- Assist in preparation of test procedures, checklists, discrepancy report disposition, scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, and mechanical test buildup.
- Interpret engineering drawings, sketches, and work instructions in order to carry out assignments.
- Train on and learn the altitude physical symptoms of decompression sickness, hypoxia, hyperventilation, and the treatment of each.
- Fabricate, modify, and assemble various complex hardware and systems from engineer drawings, sketches, or verbal and written instructions.
- Support mechanical test buildup, securing of gas samples, precision cleaning, and other related requirements for test operations.
- Maintain work area in a neat, orderly, and safe condition.
- Operate mechanical systems through a data and controls computer interface as applicable.
- Assist in the performance of altitude chamber and life support system operations, personal equipment maintenance, and other routine maintenance of altitude support hardware and equipment.
- Operate forklift and man-lift equipment in the performance of work assignments as required.
- Work directly with engineering personnel and/or higher level technicians on the design, fabrication, installation, and operation of components and special systems used in support of space environment simulation testing.
- Identify and correct potential hazards and/or unsafe acts/conditions at the work site.
- Work at elevated locations using systems/equipment such as ladders, man-lifts, scaffolding other work platforms.
Required Skills:
- Capability of passing an Air Force Class III physical and wearing a mask/respirator in support of test operations in oxygen-deficient environments.
- Ability to assist with the work of others.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Requires a High School diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to learn the methods of egress of all pressure suits worn by test subjects or astronauts participating in altitude chamber testing.
- Operational knowledge of basic mechanical equipment and systems associated with thermal, vacuum, and thermal-vacuum test environments.
- Ability to learn physical symptoms of decompression sickness, hypoxia, hypercapnia, hyperventilation, and the treatment of each.
- General understanding of concepts, practices, and procedures within assigned work area.
Preferences:
- Working knowledge of basic metal fabrication.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications on a standard PC.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Physical Requirements:
Requires constant:
- Carrying up to 25 pounds for 20 yards
- Seeing and hearing with or without correction.
- Lifting up to 25 pounds from ground level, at waist level and overhead.
- Reaching for, handling and manipulating objects and materials in all directions.
- Bending, kneeling crouching, squatting and/or crawling from 1 to 30 minutes at a time.
- Coordinating eyes, hands and fingers to operate tools and equipment.
- May at times be required to lift more than 25 pounds following procedures for team lift and/or three man lift.
- Climbing and maintaining balance on ladders, scaffolds, structures, etc. above or below ground level.
Requires the ability to:
- Follow set procedures and standards.
- Follow written and oral directions, plans and blueprints.
- Plan and work selecting proper tools.
- Compare and understand differences in the size, shape, and form or lines, figures, and objects.
- Apply basic mathematical skills.
- Must be able to pass Air Force Class III Physical. Occasional use of respirator/mask required for hazardous testing and operations. Must meet physiological requirements to serve as lock observer during testing of a vacuum chamber at pressure altitudes up to 18,000 feet.
- Picture and evaluate solid objects from drawings or diagrams using standards that can be measured or checked.
- Recognize and report safety hazards.
Work Environment:
Typically a warehouse environment. Exposure to uneven ground levels, high or low elevations, confined areas, various noise levels caused by power tools, machinery, equipment, etc., extreme hot or cold weather, excessive humidity, rain, etc.
Equipment and Machines:
Standard office equipment (computer/printer/copier/telephone), vacuum pumps, helium leak detector, passenger van, forklift, man-lift, tubing flare machine, pipe threading machine, mill, lathe, drill press, band saw (vertical & horizontal), grinder, sander, shear, sheet metal brake, hand-held power tools, basic and complex mechanics hand tools.
Attendance:
Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
Other Essential Functions:
Must be able to work in a team atmosphere. Must put forward a professional behavior that enhances productivity and promotes teamwork and cooperation. Must display a positive attitude and a spirit of cooperation with other individuals and groups. Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others. Must be able to professionally interact with astronauts undergoing training as well as senior NASA/JSC Management.
