Job Description

As an Environmental Science Specialist with the air quality compliance unit, this position will be a hybrid position between performance testing and source inspections. You will conduct environmental data review, investigate data anomalies, and perform pollution source identification for the purpose of identifying, abating, or eliminating sources of pollutants or hazards that affect either the environment or the health of the population. This is a flexible position with the option to telecommute or work virtually within Arizona.

Job Duties:
  • Perform technical review of performance test protocols for diverse stationary air pollution sources to determine agreement with permit requirements, test methods, and Departmental guidelines and standards.
  • Provide technical assistance to the regulated community, staff, and the public pertaining to environmental impact and compliance.
  • Review technical/program documents and applications.
  • Analyze test data to determine a facility's compliance status.
  • Conduct site visits, data collection, inspections, and investigations regarding air quality permitted facilities.
  • Assist in the development of permits, action plans and recommendations of permitted air quality facilities.
  • Observe performance tests to ensure the proper implementation of test methods and document findings.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
  • Knowledge of State and Federal environmental regulations, principles and practices, chemical composition, structure and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations they undergo in the environment, Agency policies and processes.
  • Ability to understand and interpret environmental rules and statutes; balance, prioritize and organize multiple tasks and complete assignments by applicable deadlines; synthesize feedback and adjust plans accordingly; develop and write technical documentation; and to summarize completed tasks and recommendations to senior staff through reports.

Selective Preference(s):
  • Level 3: Requires 3 years’ experience (a Master’s degree may substitute for 2 years’ experience, Doctorate 4 years). Environmental Professional in Training certification required for Level 3, or the ability to obtain within a year of hire.
  • Level 2: Requires 2 years’ experience
  • Field work required 70% of the time.
  • Level 4: Requires 8 years’ experience (a Masters degree may substitute for 2 years’ experience, Doctorate 4 years). Environmental Professional certification is required.
  • Valid drivers’ license required (occasional overnight stay).
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science/studies/technology, mathematics, statistics, chemistry, or environmental/chemical engineering.
