Job Description
We're looking for an outstanding mid-level aerodynamics engineer with professional experience to work on simulation and modeling of extremely novel electric aircraft, and aerodynamic systems.

We celebrate differences and are committed to a diverse workplace that fosters inclusion for employees from different backgrounds and experiences. We strongly encourage applicants from groups that are under-represented in aerospace.

What you'll do :

  • You’ll be responsible for undertaking aerodynamic simulation (CFD and a variety of lower-order tools) as well as assisting with physical testing (lab and field) in two areas: 1) primary development of full airframe shapes to reach (and exceed!) performance requirements, 2) government-funded R&D on novel high lift concepts.
  • You’ll be responsible for managing aspects of the tools/software and facilities that we use.
  • You'll collaborate regularly with the rest of the engineering team to ensure that all system and business goals and requirements are met at a rapid pace, not just the aero ones.
  • You’ll take the initiative on day-to-day technical work supporting small-scale prototypes and full scale versions, and be a positive hands-on contributor to the testing of any hardware to validate simulation work.

Who you are :

You love airplanes.

Experience

  • 2+ years full time experience in industry doing external aerodynamic development directly related to flying machines, or equivalent full time industry-sponsored/related project work. Stand-alone academic work is almost always likely to be insufficient unless you also had serious involvement in applied projects.
  • Preferred: Some experience with high performance computing, including scripting
  • Non-trivial experience with XFOIL or derivative/similar tools.
  • Direct experience with computational fluid dynamics software to produce industry-standard outputs (Openfoam+Paraview is a bonus but commercial ANSYS, STAR, etc. good too)
  • Preferred: proven comfortable with CAD - you'll have in-house CAD support to assist but you'll be able to work on some yourself, or be quick to learn.

Your approach to work

  • You have the demonstrated ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with empathy, and with a particular emphasis on visual communication.
  • Vibrant curiosity; you take a keen interest in the product and the tools and processes you use, to continually improve the work of the whole company and deepen your own knowledge and capability.
  • Extremely high levels of self-motivation – this is a small team that requires everyone to take the initiative, even if it’s in areas outside their comfort zone: job titles are just for linkedin, in practice they melt when we need the whole team hands-on to hit a milestone.
  • You have a commitment to quality when it comes to generating and analyzing data. Attention to detail while still moving fast.

Education

  • Masters or PhD in aerospace/aeronautical, mechanical, or related field with a specialization in aerodynamics

You must also:

Have the pre-existing right to work in the US (we are **not** sponsoring any new visas for this role unless you are a Canadian or Australian citizen with easy pathways)

Be able to start work with us inside 8 weeks from offer accepted.

Be available for full time work on-site in Carson, Los Angeles (remote work flexibility available once you are up and running but in-person for hands-on work is a necessity a lot of the time)

Our process

Initial call with the hiring manager. If promising you would be invited to chat to the rest of the team and present some prior project work, and we’ll do our best to show you why this is going to be a really, really impactful thing for you to do with your talent. If it's looking good still, you'd be invited to our facility for a last stage.

Who We Are

Seaflight is a young company on a mission to accelerate an electric and equitable future for flight. And we’re doing it with friendly robots! We design, build, test and manufacture uncrewed (drone) electric flying machines to deliver cargo with world-beating aerodynamic efficiency.

We’re a Y Combinator (S22) startup that’s venture-backed by top-tier VCs, with R&D funding from the government too. We’re based in sunny South Bay Los Angeles, not too far from the beaches.

The company is first developing remote-piloted wingships that will fly in ground effect to offer an efficient, low-cost, quick-to-market way to establish logistics service in some of the world’s most difficult-to-serve markets. Taking advantage of several cutting-edge developments we need to do this, a much broader range of applications is on the horizon as we aim to be a global leader in key tech for all forms of electrified flight. We're showing it’s possible now to cut costs, cut emissions, cut time, and cut worries with electric flight that is focused on extreme efficiency, not crazy complexity.

Benefits

  • Health insurance: medical, vision, dental, short-term disability, and life
  • Flexible hours (deliverable-based goals)
  • Employee equity
  • Relocation assistance
  • Flexible time off (just need manager approval)
  • Personal recognition for your work through technical publishing, social media features, industry events
