Adult Esl Business English Teacher

Position Summary

The ESL Business English Teacher provides English classes to adult staff at Canal Alliance, who identify as English language learners and will become students of this course. The teacher will ensure that students gain the skills necessary to increase their professional and departmental performance in the nonprofit world. The teacher will integrate relevant teaching practices in grammar, writing, listening, speaking and reading as relevant to nonprofit work. Teachers must be passionate believers in culturally responsive teaching and the power of education to improve career outcomes for students.

This position will teach whole group small classes, as well as hold one-on-one individualized sessions per student. Sessions can be held online or in-person, depending on both student and teacher needs. Whole group classes will be held twice a week, Monday-Friday for two hours per day, twice a week, during 9am-5pm work hours. Individualized sessions will be scheduled directly between the teacher and the students and will total no more than 4 hours per week.

This role would include 12 hours of work weekly for a 13-week trimester, which includes planning and preparation, group instruction, individualized instruction, and reporting on goals. We are hiring for the Summer 2023 trimester with the hope that the teacher would continue in following trimesters. Summer trimester runs from May 22nd, 2023, to August 17th, 2023.

Essential Functions

• Provide a nurturing, supportive, and positive learning environment, with high expectations
• Ability to coach on professional goals that incorporate ESL strategies
• Prepare and deliver lesson plans in line with Communicative Language and Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Teaching
• Maintain accurate records of student attendance
• Monitor student progress
• Modify instruction based on student data
• Curriculum development for individualized student career goals
• Communicate consistently and assist in identifying needs of students

Education and Experience

• Career experience and understanding of professional work at nonprofits
• TESOL certification (preferred)
• Bachelor’s Degree
• Experience in working with and coaching adult professionals
• Minimum of 1 year of Business/Professional English teaching background (preferred)

Qualifications- Skills and Knowledge

• Ability to function with minimal supervision, follow directions and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
• Comfortable using Google Drive for tracking attendance, assessments and lesson plans
• Excellent cultural and linguistic responsiveness skills, including the ability to work with people of varied cultural and socio-economic backgrounds
• Ability to create individualized curriculum
• Ability to provide effective and engaging ESL instruction
• Excellent organizational skills
• Ability to elicit learner knowledge, grade language appropriate to level, and minimize teacher talk
• Ability to track and analyze data to monitor progress towards milestones
• Experience using Zoom, specifically screen sharing, creating breakout rooms, and ability to monitor while going in and out of breakout rooms

Compensation

This is a part-time, non-exempt position.

This position is fully remote. Must be a California resident.
