What We Do
The Community Development Department of the City of Beverly Hills is responsible for the review and processing of development projects including land entitlements, zoning and plan review, inspection services, permit issuance, and code enforcement. It also oversees programs such as rent control/stabilization, transportation planning, historic preservation program, animal control and records requests. Community Development also provides staff assistance to 4 city commissions; including, Planning, Architectural, Design Review, and Cultural Heritage.

What We're Looking For

The City of Beverly Hills is seeking an outstanding undergraduate student in engineering, architecture or any construction related major for Administrative Intern in the Community Development Department to support the Plan Review Division. Selection Process
Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications and whose interests and experience most closely meet the needs of the Department may be invited to participate in the next steps of the recruitment process which may include:

Disaster Service Workers: All City of Beverly Hills employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.

Major Duties

Under general supervision, the undergraduate student provides short-term staff support to all City departments, divisions, functions or special projects; assists in performing specific and miscellaneous duties as assigned and does related work as required. The position will expose students to career options within a Municipal Government environment.

Some of the core duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assists in analyzing data
  • Performs basic research May participate in a "Rotational Internship" assisting various departments or in a "Department - Assigned Internship".
  • Prepares reports and summaries.
  • Assists in preparation of Commission meetings and packets.
  • Assists in budget preparation and maintenance.
  • Performs related duties as required
  • Uses a computer and maintains appropriate records and files.
  • Attends Commission meetings, City Council sessions.
  • Assists in administrative and clerical support activities as needed.
  • Assists in collecting data for department studies, functions, and/or projects.
  • May assist in preparation of agenda statements, administrative regulations, procedural manuals, revision of rules and regulations, resolutions, press releases, etc. Interacts with the public in person or via telephone.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in an accredited college or university is required.
  • Coursework in Public Administration, Urban Planning, Industrial Psychology or related field is desirable.
  • Current enrollment at an accredited College or University and in good standing is required for an Undergraduate Student Intern.

  • Must have a strong desire to work in a public service oriented environment.

  • Must have good organizational skills.

  • Use computers and learn computer programs
  • Analyze and problem solve.

  • Independently understand facts and draw sound conclusions.
  • Work effectively and communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
  • Prepare and present a variety of concise reports.
