Job Description
Daemen University is a dynamic, independent, liberal arts institution committed to excellence in student centered learning. The University places special emphasis on preparing students for excellence in professional life, civic engagement, and on instilling and understanding that learning is an exciting lifelong journey. Students are encouraged to be creative, innovative, ethically minded leaders for an ever-changing, diverse, and interconnected world.
The Mission of Daemen University is to prepare students for life and leadership in an increasingly diverse and complex world through the integration of education and professional preparation. Daemen University is going beyond instrumental needs to foster the development of individuals who are dedicated to the health and well-being of local and global communities.
Purpose of Role
The Department of Visual and Performing Arts is seeking an Adjunct Instructor for Visual Literacy.
About This Opportunity
The Visual and Performing Arts Department is seeking a qualified adjunct instructor for an introductory, asynchronous course in Visual Literacy. The selected candidate will be responsible for teaching IND/CA 125, with oversight by the Chair of the Visual and Performing Arts Department for curriculum alignment and institutional requirements.
Required Qualifications
Required qualifications: Masters in a field related to Visual Literacy including, but not limited to, Art, Communication Studies, Media, or Philosophy. Teaching experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
Terminal degree (PhD, MFA) in a field related to Visual Literacy including, but not limited to, Art, Communication Studies, Media, or Philosophy
Course(s)
CA-125-01/IND 125-01 Intro to Visual Literacy Fulfills core competencies: Critical Thinking and Problem Solving; Information Literacy; Communication Skills. Cross listed as IND 125. In 2015, editors of the study Looking and Learning: Visual Literacy across the Disciplines published the following statement: "The mechanics of vision are so apparently familiar as to be misleading. Vision is the primary way sighted individuals gather information about the world. More than a third of the human brain is devoted to the process of seeing, and much of this process is automatic, efficient, and largely effortless. Yet vision is not a passive process."2 Whereas educational environments have focused largely on the interpretation of text, in a world increasingly saturated with imagery the ability to accurately and effectively read images is more crucial than ever. The first course in a sequence of three, CA 125 will prepare students to recognize, understand and describe imagery and its manipulations.
Daemen University strongly encourages all campus community members to get vaccinated for COVID-19, including a booster vaccine.
