Position Summary:
The Bank Street School for Children is seeking a passionate, knowledgeable, and team-oriented Music teacher, who can serve as half-year sabbatical leave replacement teaching grades 2-4. There is also an option for the person taking this role to work part-time (paid hourly) in the fall semester as a Chorus Assistant for the same grade levels, partnering closely with the Middle School Music Teacher who will be leaving on sabbatical in the spring. In general, a commitment to emotional, social, cognitive, and physical development, a progressive approach to teaching and learning, and an interest in professional growth are expected.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Skilled in designing instruction that is data-driven, differentiated, and actively engaging
- Knowledge of child development, progressive education, and constructivist teaching
- Proficiency in reading music and keyboard skills, including transposing and sight-reading
- Experience in developing hands-on, developmentally appropriate Music curricula
- Desire to work collaboratively utilizing an interdisciplinary approach to education Demonstrated personal and professional commitment to diversity, social justice, and equity
- Bachelor's degree in music education or related field; a master’s degree is preferable
- At least three years of teaching Elementary general music and choral directing/conducting
- Strong written and oral communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Performs other duties, such as arrival and dismissal, if assigned
- Attending regular division, department, and supervisory meetings
- Delivering a culturally-sustaining music curriculum that is responsive to children’s identity development
- Collaborate with the music teacher to write end-of-year reports
- Designing, organizing, sharing, and maintaining the music room and the auditorium with the music department
- Directing three choruses, one for each grade level 2nd - 4th, organizing dress rehearsals and concerts in the spring
- Supporting the division head with planning and running monthly middle school assemblies, including the 4th-grade moving-up assembly.
- Differentiating instruction to support group and individual student learning
- Communicating progress and concerns with families through email as necessary and a written report in the spring
- Teaching group singing, music games, pitched and unpitched percussion (xylophone and choir chimes experience preferred), with emphasis on music literacy, to the 2nd-4th graders, usually in half groups
