Ocean Cargo Underwriting Specialist Jobs

Markel offers hybrid working schedules of 3 days in the office and 2 days remote.

Excellent oral and written communication and organizational skills

Take necessary measures to obtain information needed to finalize inquiries/transactions and maintain a suspense and follow-up system for outstanding underwriting items.

Ensure accuracy of information inputted into all appropriate systems and verify that all necessary documentation is in the file.

Under Underwriter direction, attached appropriate forms and makes policy changes as requested.

Establish, support, and maintain effective relationships and/or regular contact with clients and build strong relationships with employees across the organization.

5+ years of Underwriting experience preferably in the Middle Market Monoline Property segment or a Multiline background;

Presentation and public speaking skills;

Strong negotiations skills and sales acumen;

Knowledge and understanding of current insurance marketplace conditions;

Some of your specific responsibilities could include:

Establish relationships with key trading partners and drive submission activity across assigned Brokers.

Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required

Have knowledge and become expert on HTS Code and any other shipping requirements.

May provide support and direction to less experienced team members.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements

Implements and maintains pricing infrastructures related to export customs reporting.

Ensure shipments are tracked and traced, documented accurately, while keeping costs down collectively.

Strong time management and organizational skills

Demonstrates problem solving skills on risk and service-related issues, and broad institutional knowledge in the development of solutions.

Manage ad hoc projects, and or participate in periodic process and technical design work to improve service, efficiency, or profitability.

Group underwriting experience, preferably 4+ years

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience

Strong Analytical and mathematical skills

Experience with using logistics IT visibility platforms and tools to drive proactive management of ocean / air freight

Capable of working in a remote work group and being managed by a remote manager

Proactively measure and manage ocean freight capacity globally working with I/E procurement, carriers, freight forwarders, customs brokers, and various sector representatives

8-10 years’ experience in transportation (ocean, air, international logistics required)

English fluency both written and verbal required; exceptional communication skills across global businesses (additional languages as an asset)

Experience directly leading cross-functional competencies, people, and teams

Providing technical direction to management, less senior specialists, producers, and claims adjusting colleagues

Collaborating with Distribution, Territory Managers, and other line(s) of business underwriters to target desirable accounts and cross selling opportunities from brokers

Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), collaboration, building trust with wide range of colleagues and clients

Minimum 7 years of Commercial Insurance Company, Agency or Brokerage experience

Managing a book of business and input to the budget relative to regional budget/goals

Establishing new business production goals and submission flow relative to the book of business
