Overview Genetic counselors are healthcare professionals who specialize in the field of medical genetics and counseling. They provide information and support to individuals and families who have, or may be at risk for, a variety of inherited conditions. Genetic counselors help individuals make informed decisions about their health and the health of their families. Detailed Job Description Genetic counselors work with individuals and families to assess their risk for inherited conditions, provide information about genetic testing and other options, and help them make informed decisions about their health. They also provide counseling and support to individuals and families who have, or may be at risk for, a variety of inherited conditions. Genetic counselors may also provide education and resources to healthcare providers and the public about genetic conditions and testing. Job Skills Required
• Knowledge of medical genetics and counseling
• Ability to communicate effectively with patients and families
• Ability to interpret and explain complex genetic information
• Ability to work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals
• Ability to provide emotional support and guidance
• Knowledge of ethical and legal issues related to genetic counseling
Job Qualifications
• Master’s degree in genetic counseling or related field
• Certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC)
• Licensure in the state where practicing
• Experience in a clinical setting
