Position Summary Information

General Information
The part-time Youth Program Specialist is responsible for assisting with the planning and implementation of the Sexual Risk Avoidance Education (SRAE) Program, funded by the Virginia Department of Health. The Youth Program Specialist facilitates the programs “Teen Outreach Program” and “Project AIM” with middle school students in Harrisonburg City and Page County, Virginia.

The JMU SRAE initiative is a collaborative effort that emphasizes abstinence, communication, education and career success, healthy life skills, and adolescent development to significantly reduce the number of teen pregnancies in the Harrisonburg and Page County areas of Virginia. SRAE is part of a larger organization, SexEdVA at the Institute for Innovation in Health and Human Services at James Madison University. Duties and Responsibilities
  • Recruit students for in-school and after-school TOP clubs.
  • Communicate regularly with school staff about program scheduling.
  • Ensure accurate and timely data collection for all programs as required by the Virginia Department of Health.
  • Implement the Teen Outreach Program (TOP) and Project AIM program with middle school students in Harrisonburg City and Page County Schools.
  • Prepare materials for club meetings and activities.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills.
  • General computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Outlook.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with youth and facilitate youth programming, planning effective public health education programs.


Additional Considerations:
  • Knowledge of adolescent development and best practices in teen pregnancy prevention.
  • Knowledge and experience in best practices working with schools and community partners.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, the university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, protocols for the immediate notification of students and staff upon confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and other matters of importance related to security and safety. The report includes statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on-campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire safety information.
