Youth Baseball/Softball Umpire

Unless otherwise stated, all duties, responsibilities, and qualifications stated herein are essential functions of this position.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
This position is under the general direction and supervision of the Recreation Supervisor. The part-time Umpire is responsible for officiating scheduled baseball/softball games coordinated by the Parks and Recreation Department.

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:
This position is a seasonal position. Games will vary Monday-Friday afternoons. 2023 Season dates TBD. May-Aug.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties are normal for the position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive; other duties may be required and assigned.

• The umpire will talk with each coach before the game and review any ground rules, unusual circumstances or local field hazards.
• The umpire will officiate youth baseball and softball games.
• The umpire will arrive fifteen (15) minutes prior to the schedule game time.
• The umpire will make sure all players are in proper uniform and notify the coach if any problems need to be rectified.
• Keep track of game time
• The umpire will approach his/her position as a representative of Cottage Grove Parks & Recreation, displaying respect for the facility, participants, parents and co-workers.
• The umpire will remain unbiased while umpiring contest and will avoid verbal contact with spectators.
• The umpire will check all equipment and field for safety hazards.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of supervising children in an educational or recreational setting.
• Ability to operate ball pumps and whistles.
• Ability to carry out assigned tasks with minimal supervision
• Basic knowledge of baseball
