Summary:

The Yard Hostler is responsible for safely handling and maneuvering tractor trailers on the yard and within an area.

Job Duties: -

• Conduct frequent yard checks; proactively monitor and communicate trailer pool status
• Enforce yard safety guidelines with carriers; provide yard safety suggestions
• Documents and performs trailer moves on both the Inbound and Outbound operations.
• Maintains the cleanliness of grounds
• Supports Yard Assistant and Mechanic with maintenance duties
• Other duties as required and assigned
• Assist customer’s carriers with instruction and direction while on the yard.
• Transports trailers to keep refrigerated units fueled
• Assist customer’s carriers with instruction and direction while on the yard.
• Documents and performs trailer moves on both the Inbound and Outbound operations.
• Moves trailers at customer facility
• Responsible for insuring seals are on applicable trailers
• Maintain yard cleanliness
• Verifies and/or reports damages
• Coordinate with warehouse team to manage the trailer pool effectively in accordance with dock schedule
• Maintain forklift certification to assist with warehouse functions when necessary / load outbound trucks in-between yard move
• Perform pre/post trip tractor checklists; keep equipment clean
• Performs yard checks throughout the day for Inbound and Outbound
• Communicate with the Inbound and Outbound Lead’s on trailer move prioritization
• Communicate with the Inbound and Outbound Lead’s on trailer move prioritization
• Maintains the cleanliness of grounds
• Willing to work outside in the elements (hot/cold/rain/etc.)
• Shuttles tankers, hoppers, and containers
• Performs yard checks throughout the day for Inbound and Outbound
• Ability to work longer shifts and/or occasional Saturday or Sunday when necessary
• Transports trailers to keep refrigerated units fueled
• Tracks trailer inspections
• Operate yard tractor safely to remove loaded trailers from the docks and stage empty trailers by priority in the appropriate door
• Responsible for insuring seals are on applicable trailers
• Verifies and/or reports damages

Requirements:

• High school diploma or GED (General Education Diploma) equivalency
• CDL preferred
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written or oral instructions
• Minimum 1 year related experience and/or training
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manual

Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit and climb or balance and must regularly lift and /or move up to 50 pounds. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and can be exposed to extreme heat and extreme cold including climates consistent with outside weather conditions.
