The Position
Wildlife Area Technicians may be assigned to work at a wildlife management area, on a water development crew or as a regional utility person. Typical duties involve the maintenance of wildlife habitat by operating light and heavy equipment, controlling water levels in wetland areas, managing vegetation and related activities intended to develop and enhance an environment which will support the State's wildlife species.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
Member of a two-person Wildlife Water Development crew that performs a wide range of necessary water development (guzzler) -related inspection, maintenance, repair, and construction duties. The position will be responsible to operate and maintain vehicles, light and heavy equipment, and various hand and power tools to assure the proper operation and safety on all projects. Incumbents are also responsible for managing an extensive materials inventory and planning/executing materials purchasing for the build season and individual projects. Incumbent will provide training and supervision on relevant equipment and construction to volunteers and, at times, seasonal employees. This position also participates in other programs as needed to achieve assigned habitat program objectives. Duties may require this position working for extended periods in locations that are a significant distance from the home base, inclusive of camping out in remote areas for up to eight days at a time. This position interacts with NDOW and non-NDOW people including the many volunteers assisting the crew on guzzler construction and major rebuild projects. The two positions are being recruited at Wildlife Area Technician 1, 2, and 3 levels. Positions may be filled at any level. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)

Graduation from high school or equivalent education and four years of experience in maintenance, farming or construction, one of which was maintaining lands for wildlife, constructing dikes, ditches or roads; applying fertilizers; managing water levels and manipulating flow of water; maintaining equipment and structures by cleaning, painting, repairing and rebuilding structures; and collecting data and surveying wildlife by counting and inventorying species; and/or constructing and/or repairing wildlife water catchment devices; OR one year of experience as a Wildlife Technician I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

Special Requirements

Pursuant to NRS 284.4006, positions in this series have been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in these positions must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.

Positions in this series are required to obtain and maintain a valid Nevada commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement and air brake certification within six months of appointment.

Requires a valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility at the time of appointment and for continuing employment.


The Examination
