Job Summary
Under general supervision, the WIC Educator delivers WIC services to participants by determining and documenting eligibility, maintaining participant and program records, interviewing and providing nutrition and breastfeeding education, and promoting behavior change. Refers WIC participants to appropriate healthcare, community, and social service programs. Assists clinic in front desk reception area duties including checking in participants and issuing Food Instruments (FIs).
Essential Functions:
  • Follows state and local agency procedures to provide a quality WIC Program. • Meets individual and clinic productivity expectations as determined by the WIC Clinic Supervisor. • Schedules appointments and classes appropriately; completes clerical duties as needed. • Teaches or assists with nutrition and/or breastfeeding education classes as needed. • Consistently attends and participates in staff meetings, huddles, trainings, local agency initiatives and departmental events. • Offers voter registration services in accordance with the National Voter Registration Act. (30%)
  • Enrolls WIC Participants and determines WIC program eligibility. • Completes accurate health assessments at specified intervals obtaining anthropometric and hemoglobin measurements. • Conducts nutrition and breastfeeding interviews utilizing a participant centered positive approach. Identifies all relevant nutrition risk factors and makes appropriate referrals to the High Risk Counselor. • Documents eligibility, client comments, assessment, counseling, and plan. Dialogues with participants to identify appropriate behavior change goals; follows up and documents progress toward goals. • Provides full explanation of the program to participants to prevent and help resolve participant misuse. • Maintains confidentiality of participants and ensures that participants are treated equally with respect, compassion, and empathy. • Assesses need for and refers participants to appropriate health care, community and social service programs. (40%)
  • Ability to promote breastfeeding as the optimal infant choice while allowing participant choice. • Maintains a breastfeeding friendly environment. • Provides quality breastfeeding education and counseling. • Refers to available breastfeeding support services. • Issues manual breast pumps and identities need for other pumps according to the Denver Health WIC Pump Policy and Procedure. (30%)

Education:
  • High School Diploma or GED Required

Work Experience:
  • 1-3 years customer service experience with a minimum of one year working with the public Required and

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to: operate standard office equipment; prepare and maintain accurate and neat records; communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Proficient typing and bilingual skills preferred.
  • Knowledge of basic spelling and math, including measurements used for weight, height, and length (fractions, pounds, and ounces).
  • Ability to: work as a team member; provide quality customer service skills in person and over the phone; promote breastfeeding and provide lactation support.
