Job Description

The purpose of this job is to perform daily operations at all Water Booster Pump Stations to maintain compliance with new rules and regulations, policies, and procedures. Other duties include the collection, test, preserve, and document bacteriological and new construction water samples. Investigates, researches, and resolves complaints associated with Water Quality. This is a safety sensitive and/or DOT position. As such, you will be required to participate in random drug testing at the city.

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

  • Assist with locating, marking and exercise water distribution valves for Unidirectional Flushing Program
  • Collect water samples and conduct analysis of entry points, average water age, and high-water age throughout the distribution system for League City's Nitrification Action Plan
  • Investigate, research, and resolve complaints associated with Water Quality and Water Pressure
  • Collect, test and preserve bacteriological and new construction water samples
  • Perform related work as required
  • Perform Water Operation duties as needed and when on-call
  • Collect daily CL2 residuals and other chemical test as required.
  • Prepare/Input database information into the computer system of the- daily reports and record findings from booster pump stations (i.e. pressure, tank levels, water usage, electrical usage, chemical usage)

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least one (1) to three (3) years of related work experience in Water Operations, Water Quality Procedures, Customer Service, Inspection/Cross Connection Control, Backflow Prevention and Assemblies.
  • Six months of training beyond High school diploma (or GED equivalent).
  • TCEQ Class C Groundwater Treatment Operator License
Preferred Licenses or Certifications
  • Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester License
  • Customer Service Inspector License
  • TCEQ Water Operator License (any above minimum requirement)

Supplemental Information

Knowledge of:

  • Unidirectional Flushing Program and opening and closing of a fire hydrant
  • Water distribution systems and plant operations; including basic home plumbing systems and how they operate
  • English grammar, spelling, punctuation
  • Nitrification Action Plan and its impact to Water Quality and the Distribution System
  • Techniques for collecting, testing and preserving drinking water sample
  • AWWA Standard for Disinfection of Water Mains, Pipes, and Storage Facilities
  • Facility checks, chlorine residuals, monochloramine, free ammonia, and pump temperature and pressures
  • Cross connection principles
  • Basic occupational health and safety regulations for hand tools and fire hydrants
  • GIS maps of newly constructed lines
  • Use of various analytical instruments used for testing water quality parameters
  • Water treatment plant functions, operational standards, policies, and regulations
  • Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment
Skill in:
  • Collecting and testing water samples
  • Proper sampling techniques and record keeping
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships
  • Performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature
  • Operating and maintaining pumps, motors and chlorinators
  • Performing basic laboratory analyses or examinations of water samples
  • Preparing reports and maintaining records
  • Gathering and analyzing information to make recommendations based on findings within scope of organizational goals
Ability to:
  • Perform water chemistry test to adjust chemical dosages for chlorine and liquid ammonia sulfate based on flows
  • Perform basic match such as adding and subtracting daily pumping amounts
  • Communicate with citizens and provide excellent customer service
  • Prioritize work and meet schedules and deadlines
  • Make decisions based on data given/available during emergencies
  • Supervise work assignments
  • Troubleshoot problems with pumps and motors
  • Perform basic field analysis using portable analytical instruments
  • Maintain the confidentiality of information and professional boundaries
  • Read GIS maps of distribution system
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions
  • Must be computer literate with skill to operate computer programs; including databases and spreadsheets
  • Read and operate PLC's and online analyzers
