Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking qualified candidates for a Water Resources Engineer for our Salt Lake City, Denver or Phoenix offices. As a Water Resources Engineer, you will be a member of a multi-disciplinary team working in mining, minerals and metals on a variety of projects across the globe. The Water Resources Engineer will be responsible for technical aspects of water management planning and design including hydrology assessments, hydraulic analyses, hydraulic structures designs, water management plans, mine water balance studies and construction oversight. The position frequently overlaps with civil engineering in support of site development to support risk reduction and permitting requirements. Experience with civil engineering details, design, and construction experience is preferred.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and advise on technical aspects of mining and mining infrastructure projects, business development and proposal activities (contribution of high-quality technical content expected during all stages).
  • Participating in Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines in the execution of all work.
  • Follow safe work practices and adhere to company and client guidelines and policies for planning and executing work in a safe manner.
  • Engineering design of hydraulic structures including spillways, energy dissipation structures, stream diversions, surface drainage systems, levees and other related floodplain management structures, sedimentation ponds, and water storage reservoirs and outlet works. Design emphasis is on long-lasting structures.
  • Developing water management plans related to industrial water use and erosion control,
  • Establish and grow productive, collaborative relationships internally within the company, and externally with the team’s priority clients.
  • Provide technical expertise and lead technical delivery on a variety of projects ensuring successful outcomes for our clients and beneficiaries.
  • Hydrology analyses of design precipitation and flood flows to support the hydraulic design of dam structures and drainage infrastructure, across a range of locations and climates.
  • Lead, challenge, and inspire technical staff (including coaching/mentoring young professionals) through substantive engagement and communication.
  • Mentor and advocate for the water resources team administratively and take an active role in the development of workloads and assignation of resources to projects.
  • Hydraulic modelling, including dam breach inundation studies and river floodplain and geomorphic analyses.
  • Contribute to the development and execution of the water resources team’s technical and business practice and actively contribute to the maintenance of Stantec’s quality standards in a process of continuous improvement.
  • Supporting construction specifications and construction oversight.

Qualifications

  • Strong interpersonal, collaborative, and communication skills.
  • Possesses excellent time management skills, thorough understanding of task assignment and schedule, budgeting and efficient use of time and resources.
  • Develop and maintain a growth-based strategy that focuses on the internal development and external recruitment of team members to focus on complicated multidisciplinary projects worldwide.
  • Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.
  • Technical knowledge, experience and/or education in hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, calculations, and design.
  • Well-developed understanding of all phases of project document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications.
  • Ability to check the work of others for accuracy and completeness and manage time to meet project budget and schedule.
  • Working knowledge in civil/geotechnical construction oversight of major earthworks or water control structures is an asset.
  • Ability to travel to field locations including the ability to obtain a passport and travel internationally.
  • Ability to solve complex problems using sound professional judgment, creativity, and innovation.
  • Thorough understanding of codes, legal and design requirements in relevant jurisdictions.
  • Ability to effectively discuss project issues with clients and reviewing agencies.
  • Ability to travel to field-based assignments as required.
  • Desire to focus on developing the business aspects of the practice through proposal and business development activities to maintain the high level of chargeability of the group.
  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • Strong knowledge of civil systems means and methods, materials, and industry standards.
  • Knowledge of software packages such as HEC-HMS, SEDCAD, HEC-RAS 1D and 2D, GoldSim. Experience with Flo-2D is preferred.
  • Strong writing skills and experience with producing technical memos, reports and specification documents.

Education and Experience

  • Subject matter expert in water resource engineering.
  • 5-15 years of relevant increasingly responsible experience.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree (preferred) in civil, environmental or water resources engineering with emphasis in water management.

Pay transparency laws require employers to provide the following information for positions that may be in the following jurisdiction(s):

Salary Range(s):

  • $93,400 - $135,400 (CA, CO, WA locations only)

The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible.
