The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado is the nation’s primary laboratory for research and development of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies.
A postdoc position is available in the Materials, Chemical, and Computational Science Directorate to work in electrons to molecules technologies, such as low temperature water electrolysis and CO2 reduction. The ideal candidate will have the necessary technique and creativity to develop modeling approaches to elucidate connections between transport phenomena and device performance. Electrolysis systems are multi-physics in nature, and therefore require understanding of conservation principles for mass, species, charge, energy, and momentum. Effective modeling approaches complement experimental work and are both descriptive and predictive.
.
Basic Qualifications
Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.
  • Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.
Additional Required Qualifications
Ph.D. in chemistry, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science & engineering, or related field. Record of publications/presentations in areas related to electrolyzers (hydrogen, carbon dioxide reduction), and/or fuel cells.
Qualified candidates should demonstrate considerable skill in designing numerical experiments, interpreting the results, and applying them to device-level systems. Finally, excellent interpersonal as well as oral and written communication skills are essential for success at NREL. Inclusion and diversity are core values, and the postdoc will be expected to support a work environment the strengthens the unique talents and innovative ideas of every employee.
Preferred Qualifications
An acceptable candidate will be able to develop modeling approaches across many length scales (sub-µm to cm) and in 1D, 2D, and 3D. Applicants will ideally have experience electrochemical systems, however candidates with good modeling experience in other fields, such as CFD, will be considered. Specific skills of interest include:
  • Experience in modeling mass and species transport, preferably in electrochemical and/or chemically reacting systems.
  • Working knowledge of electrocatalytic mechanisms beyond the Butler-Volmer equation, including microkinetic models and transition state theory
  • Proficiency in commercial/open-source software, such as Comsol, ANSYS/Fluent, OpenFOAM, FEniCSx, Python, Matlab, etc.
  • Familiarity with charge transport equations, such as ohm’s law, Poisson’s equation for electrostatics, Nernst-Planck equation, etc.
  • An understanding of numerical methods techniques, both using commercial software and/or homemade codes, is advantageous.
  • Experience with chemically reacting flow, multiphase flow, and multicomponent diffusion
In general, candidates should have a demonstrated track record of success in addressing fundamental and applied science questions and devising solutions to challenging problems.
