VP, Head of Vaccines R&D Strategic Business Operations

The VP, Head of Vaccines R&D Strategic Business Operations will work with the SVP of Vaccines R&D, the leadership team and their supporting and matrix functions to improve organizational effectiveness and productivity. This successful candidate will play a vital role in the development and execution of strategic initiatives at the direction of the SVP, Vaccines R&D and will identify, connect, and implement opportunities within function and across the broader R&D, Quality, Global Manufacturing, and Commercial organizations. Their team will support all strategic projects including organizational changes, large investment reviews, long term strategic projects and integrations. They will build strong, positive influential relationships with other R&D teams, Business Units, and key stakeholders, and will serve as a key member of the Vx R&D leadership team

This role will function as “thought partner” to the SVP and provide appropriate challenge to improve organizational effectiveness. They will ensure decision making is taken at the right level and support the leadership team through practical, pragmatic support, bringing excellent judgment, financial and business sophistication, emotional intelligence, and relevant experience to bear on a constantly changing set of challenges and opportunities. The role will also be accountable for overall risk management and driving a culture that enables efficient, high-quality delivery aligned to strategy. And will be accountable for leading a high performing operations team that will ensure end to end operational requirements and support for the organization.

The VP, Vaccines R&D Strategic Business Operations will be a close partner with the heads of HR, Finance, and Communications & Government Affairs Leads for the team. They will work closely with the office of the Chief Scientific Officer to facilitate execution of the R&D Strategy and support preparation for senior leadership meetings, governance, scientific committees, and board papers and work closely in collaboration with other key senior operations leads to ensure cohesion and alignment in driving delivery of the GSK R&D priorities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and contribute to cross-functional teams and initiatives tasked with improving operational efficiency and/or quality.
  • Responsible for oversight and management of large strategic projects across the organization, effectively managing transversal operations resources.
  • Accountable for the development of a high performing operations team, including management of top tier internal and external project and change management capabilities.
  • Maximize organizational effectiveness through establishment of highly skilled staff and clear practices based on the most modern and impactful methods from both internal and external solutions.
  • Partner with Portfolio and Strategy and Business Insights team to analyze existing states and research competitor solutions. Develop target state analyses, design models to analyses potential improvements, develop business cases to support executive investment decisions and implement and communicate plans for endorsed changes.
  • Benchmarking performance against peers, developing key metrics, identifying industry best practices, providing the primary narrative and creating/driving initiatives to achieve best practice outcomes.
  • Accountable for risk strategy and proactively identifies, escalates, and resolves business issues and considers options to manage implications and risks.
  • Accountable for oversight of the Lab Operations model, ensuring a successful ROI resulting in increased time and focus on science and improved overall productivity for our scientists.
  • Work closely with Business Development and other related functional lines to support and resource key strategic partnerships to fully realize a complete return on investment.
  • Supports the leadership team to build and track progress of meaningful yearly objectives aligned to RDLT goals.

Basic Qualifications

  • Experience delivering on R&D objectives and key priorities that align with R&D strategy
  • 10 years+ experience working in Pharmaceutical, Biotech or Vx R&D
  • Project management and change management experience working on multiple priority projects and strategies
  • Undergraduate degree in Life Sciences, Business, or other relevant areas
  • Experience leading high performing teams
  • Experience in risk assessment management and development of strategies

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in Vaccines.
  • Proven delivery leading complex, large scale operational activities within a fast moving and ambiguous environment.
  • Strong business acumen with financial and resources management experience
  • Second line leadership experience with large teams
  • Scientific leadership experience and deep knowledge to support complex science functions.
  • MS/PhD in Life Science, MBA
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with high emotional intelligence to influence and work across a matrix with multiple and diverse global stakeholders.
  • Ability to positively influence at all levels of the organization and work closely with the GSK R&D LT and with GSK Global Leadership Team members.
  • Strong logistics and organization skills and the ability to operate independently and multitask, dealing with information at a variety of levels on large number of projects.
  • Consistent attention to detail, focus on continuous improvement and ability to deliver to demanding deadlines and at the highest quality.
  • Evidence of success working in highly complex, global, and/or multi-disciplinary structures with high accountability and multiple lines of reporting
