Job Description
Position Summary


The Visual Editing Supervisor is responsible for monitoring the visual editing process to ensure consistent workflow, assigning visual editing, linkage and consolidation IPAQ’s to visual editing staff, and responding to visual editing questions or problems. This position also performs other Quality Control activities such as abstracting records from physician’s offices and other sources, conducting death clearance, follow-back and processing modified records. The Visual Editing Supervisor collaborates with the Data Collection Manager and the Data Collection and Production Supervisor and other supervisors within the Data Collection Unit working as a leadership team and providing cross-coverage when needed. The Visual Editing Supervisor will also assist with regional and statewide audits and other projects as necessary.


Employment Type: Full Time


Full salary range for this position: $73,813 to $107,089 per year. The typical hiring range for this position is from $73,813 (minimum) to $90,451 (midpoint), based on 100% FTE. The starting salary is determined based on the candidate’s knowledge, skills, experience, as well as budget availability.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities


  • Assists with abstracting surgery center, radiation oncology, Physician Only, Pathology Only, Death Certificate Only cases when needed.
  • Assists with special studies such as the SEER POC as needed.
  • Responds to questions regarding processing of visual editing, linkage, consolidation, or modified records.
  • Tracks and monitors visual editing staff productivity and provides feedback to visual editors.
  • Provides monthly productivity reports to Data Collection Manager and CRGC Senior Management Team.
  • Performs visual editing, linkage, and consolidation of cancer reports.
  • Provides clear, concise feedback on data items to be in error (Discrepancy Reports) to regional facility registrars.
  • Attends all Data Collection Unit meetings, Visual Editing section meetings, Public Health Institute/CRGC meetings, CCR meetings and SEER meetings as required.
  • Participates in software testing (Eureka) as well as testing of new technology.
  • Attends in-person and virtual local chapter, statewide and national meetings as resources allow.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Screens and classifies reportable electronic Pathology (ePath) reports into the casefinding system.
  • Assigns visual editing, linkage, consolidation and modified records to QC Specialist’s assigned to visual editing activities at least monthly, or when requested.
  • Supervises Quality Control (QC) Specialists who perform visual editing.
  • Processes modified records and deletion files.
  • Assists with other regional activities as required.
  • Responsible for training new visual editing staff.
  • Participates in statewide audits and reliability studies as requested.
  • Monitors and manages incoming visual editing, linkage, consolidation, correction, and modified records to keep backlog to a minimum.


Minimum Qualifications


  • Maintain at least 97% abstracting accuracy rate set by the California Central Cancer Registry (CCR).
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in a hospital, regional or central cancer registry with knowledge of regional/central registry operations to include auditing, data collection, visual editing, case consolidation, case finding, and follow-back procedures.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field is required, or substitute with 4 additional years of relevant experience.
  • Must be credentialed by the National Cancer Registrars Association (NCRA) as a Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR).


Other Qualifications


  • Demonstrated ability to provide training and daily supervision to staff.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, ability to interpret cancer reporting standards and answer technical questions for both new and experienced registrars both for direct reports and for hospital cancer registrars.
  • Extensive knowledge of cancer therapy, Collaborative Staging, SEER Summary Stage, SEER Extent of Disease (EOD) coding, ICD-O-3 coding, Multiple Primary and Histology Coding Rules, Hematopoietic & Lymphoid Neoplasm Data base, and cancer reporting in California utilizing Volume I.
  • Ability to travel to educational meetings for specific periods of time.
  • Excellent knowledge of medical terminology, medical procedures, anatomy and physiology and the cancer disease process.
  • Strong mathematical skills including statistics, elemental computations and averages/percentages.
  • Must be able to create clear and concise documents (PowerPoint, memos, ) for educational purposes and statewide distribution.
  • Ability to learn and use software programs including but not limited to Eureka, MS Office, and SEER*DMS.
