Job Description
Summary Position is located in R5 on the Inyo NF, Mt. Whitney RD. Incumbent is responsible for monitoring the daily functions of a visitor center to assure optimum operation as well as disseminating recreation information to the public regarding recreational opportunities, educational information, local area information, guides/pamphlets. This includes such duties as the sale of passes/permits, oversight and collection of monies from visitors, etc. See Additional Information Section for contact info Responsibilities Duties listed are at the full performance level, GS-7 Position may supervise up to 20% of the time Maintain and update all visitor center records, reports and databases. Responsible for inventory and control of various merchandise located in the visitor center. Serve as unit collection officer responsible for accurate record keeping of the visitor center funds. Provide presentations for the interpretive displays in kiosks throughout the visitor?s center. Update information contained on the forest website/social media sites. Develop handouts and/or flyers on various items to promote public awareness. Prepare various reports as requested by upper management and other outside agencies. Provide visitors with detailed information in the areas of various permits and pass requirements, local area information and recreational opportunities. Communicate safety requirements and regulations to the public of the proper use of public grounds. Resolve problems associated with the visitor facility, personnel, equipment, or sales. Resolve problems relating to cash intake for various pass and permits. Make recommendations to the supervisor and managers regarding interpretive services provided, pass and permit operations and procedures to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the visitor center operations. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. Provide course descriptions as necessary. Selective Placement Factor: Must have a valid state Driver's License as position is required to travel between Visitor's Center, Supervisor's Office and other Administrative Sites. Specialized Experience Requirement: For the GS-06: You must have one-year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as three or more of the following: Ensured that the information desk at a reception area or visitor center is covered at all times; and/or provided guidance to the public on rules and regulations regarding on-unit activities and attempts to gain public cooperation in protecting resources from damage and pollution; and/or performed regular daily activities for the reception area or visitor center, including but not limited to, answering phones, greeting visitors, daily opening and closing of the facility, and raising/lowering the flag; and/or arranged informational interpretive displays in the reception area or visitor center. For the GS-07: You must have one-year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as three or more of the following: Served as the point of contact for the dissemination of public information of a specific work program for a unit; and/or produced brochures, promotional materials, website and social media content, news releases, and/or newsletters used in support of a public information program; and/or reviewed documents for accuracy and compliance and/or formally responded to inquiries and resolved issues related to a specific work program; and/or developed curriculum, materials, and event planning for interpretive and conservation education programs; and/or served as a point of contact for the public for the sale of items such as books, maps, t-shirts, permits, passes or tickets and accounted for inventory, supplies and monies collected as part of a natural resource program. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
