About HSC

HSC has been around for over 40 years. In 1982 we became the first low cost spay/neuter clinic to open in the southeast US! HSC recently moved into our brand-new Animal Resource Center just minutes away from our previous shelter. We're thrilled to have a brand-new state-of-the-art facility which allows us to be able to offer more comprehensive services to our community. At HSC, we partner with over 48 different shelters and organizations in NC and are excited that we can have some dedicated time and space to help other organizations in our community in need of spay/neuter services. This is where our Clinic Services Vet Assistant & Animal Transport Driver position comes in!

The Role

As a Clinic Services Veterinary Assistant & Animal Transport Driver, the core of your responsibilities revolves around keeping both the animals at our shelter and animals in the public happy and healthy. You'll be assisting in prep and recovery for animals in surgery and providing wellness care and guidance to the public. You will also be providing same day transportation to and from HSC, for companion animals in our surrounding animal welfare community. Our animal transportation service only occurs once or twice a week. General duties include:

  • Assist for intake of all animals scheduled for surgery including ensuring all paperwork is properly completed by owners and all vaccines are current & explaining any high-risk factors to owners and have them sign the appropriate release form.
  • Carefully handle the animals during loading and unloading & securing crates in the vehicle.
  • Monitors all animals recovering from surgery.
  • Cleans, sterilizes, and prepares surgical packs.
  • Assist Vet Techs for shaving all animals prior to surgery and prepares surgery room and animals.
  • Utilizes proper restraint techniques to assist DVMs with physical exams and administering vaccines.
  • Review transport animal surgery paperwork to verify all animals are accounted for and are on return delivery.
  • Carefully screen all transport animals to determine fitness for surgery. Any animals showing signs of illness will not be loaded on transport.
  • Ensuring vehicle is cleaned and cared for after every use.
  • Provide excellent customer service to all visitors and clients.
  • Maintains a clean and sanitary work area in all workspaces and holding areas according to policy.
  • Drive with care and caution; observe speed limits and practice safe driving rules.

Who are we looking for?

  • One to two years of vet assistant related experience and/or training preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills required.
  • Must be comfortable interacting with dogs and cats.
  • Must have a great sense of humor and enjoy working in a relaxed office environment.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours, including evening and weekends as needed.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable mode of transportation and good driving record!!
  • Enthusiasm for the mission of the Humane Society of Charlotte and helping animals in our community.
