Job Description

This temporary job opening is located at United Nations Headquarters, in the Russian Verbatim Reporting Section, Verbatim Reporting Service, Meetings and Publishing Division, Department for General Assembly and Conference Services (DGACM). Under the general supervision of the Chief of the Verbatim Reporting Service and the direct supervision of the Chief of the Russian Verbatim Reporting Section, the incumbent prepares verbatim reports of meetings of bodies serviced by the Verbatim Reporting Service in Russian, subject to revision.

Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Verbatim Reporter will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Systematically uses official terminology and relevant references.
  • Is available and reachable during work hours for any new assignments or changes in existing assignments and delivery deadlines as necessary.
  • Completes in a timely manner any other tasks assigned to him/her by the Chief of Section in fulfillment of the Section's workplan.
  • Transcribes and/or translates assigned portions of verbatim reports, delivering, in a timely manner, the most complete, accurate and grammatically correct transcription and/or translation possible of assigned portions, subject to revision.
  • Edits the text as necessary for accuracy, making the required changes for style, syntax, grammar and procedure.
  • May perform above duties on a self-revision basis when tasked by the Chief of Section.

Education

A first-level degree from a university or from an institution of equivalent status is required.

Work Experience

Experience in the use of computer-assisted-translation (CAT) tools is required.
A minimum of five years of experience in translation, précis-writing, editing, self-revision,
verbatim reporting is required.
Experience with documentation processes of the United Nations or a similar international
organization is desirable.
Experience in verbatim reporting is desirable.

Languages

A perfect command of Russian, expected to be the candidate's main working language.
Candidates for this post must also possess an excellent knowledge of English and a knowledge of a third official language of the United Nations.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified applicants may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
Applicants who have passed the United Nations Competitive Examination (CELP or LCE) or who are already placed on the Global Language Roster of the Russian Section are not subject to any further assessment and as such, will not be invited for such an assessment.

This position is temporarily available for 11 months. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.
While this temporary job opening may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post.
Subject to the funding source of the position, the eligibility for this temporary job opening may be limited to candidates based at the duty station.
