  • The VASCULAR SONOGRAPHER will be part of the innovative team in the D. E. Strandness Jr. Vascular Laboratory at the University of Washington. Under general direction, the Vascular Sonographer independently performs vascular tests from all 5 major testing areas (extracranial carotid, intracranial cerebrovascular, peripheral arterial, peripheral venous, and visceral vascular). These examinations range from standard tests such as carotid duplex for internal carotid stenosis and venous duplex for acute deep vein thrombosis to specialized protocols developed for our specific patient population and referring providers. For example, we have developed a “Sprint Protocol” for athletes with iliac artery endofibrosis and have created an ultrasound protocol for diagnosis of pelvic venous disorders.

Our staff are expected to adapt established testing protocols for individual patients based on the history and preliminary findings in order to document the information necessary to accurately determine the diagnosis. The Vascular Sonographer also supports Vascular Surgery in the operating room when requested for intraoperative monitoring and assessment. Finally, the Vascular Sonographer supports the educational mission of the D. E. Strandness Jr. Vascular Laboratory by teaching residents and fellows in various University of Washington training programs and sonography students from several CAAHEP-accredited diagnostic medical sonography programs, and by contributing to research projects.
