Day - 10 Hour (United States of America)
Job Summary
The Vascular Access Registered Nurse (RN) provides consultation and treatment for placement of Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICC), midline catheters, and ultrasound guided peripheral IVs, practicing in an evidence-based manner, within the Scope of Practice of the California Nursing Practice Act, regulatory requirements, standards of care, and hospital policies. The Vascular Access RN performs the appropriate steps in providing consultation and assessment of the patient in placement of specialized IV accesses to include: assessing the patient, interpreting applicable data, providing requested treatment, and collaborating with the patient, nursing staff, and provider. Additionally, the Vascular Access RN coordinates care with other providers and acts as a teacher to the patient and family to provide the knowledge and skills needed to manage their central lines and prevent associated complications.
The vascular access RN is responsible for assessing and inserting the appropriate vascular access for patients who are unable to maintain a peripheral IV (PIV) or require long-term therapy not accomplished by a PIV.
Essential Functions
The essential functions listed below are general examples and not a description of comprehensive duties. Specific duties and responsibilities may vary depending on department or program needs without changing nature or scope of this position or level of responsibility. This role will not be given a routine patient assignment, rather this position is consultative in nature and provides a highly specialized service to all departments in the hospital. May be asked to perform other duties as assigned. In consultation with nursing staff and providers, the Vascular Access RN will
  • Assess patients with difficult access or need for long term IV therapy for appropriate vascular access device.
  • Attends meetings and serves on departmental and/or hospital committees as assigned.
  • Teaches needed information for self-care and illness prevention to patient and family members.
  • Documents completely and accurately in the patient’s permanent medical record
  • Safety performs all provision of care for any age-related needs of the patients served on the unit, including growth and development principles
  • Is responsible for all central line dressing changes on a weekly cadence
  • Works with staff nurses, physicians, case managers, and other team members to insure early assessment for VAD selection and implementation
  • Works to support the achievement of department strategic and organizational goals.
  • Recognizes and communicates to proper authority ethical and legal issues relative to patient care; completes incident report.
  • Participates in education with Vascular Access education with patient, family members, and staff
  • Declots VAD’s or assists staff as a resource in declotting
  • Determine the best vascular access device for the patient based on medications, current access status, diagnoses, length of IV therapy, etc.
  • Reviews physicians order
  • Troubleshoots difficult complications of VAD’s or assists staff in troubleshooting
  • Evaluates effectiveness of interventions and monitors patient for adverse responses and side effects.
  • Reports directly to patient’s primary nurse and charge nurse or physician, if necessary

  • Creates and maintains a climate conducive to healing through being present to patient & family, identifying and managing discomforts and providing emotional support and education.
  • Reviews medical records for any contraindication of peripheral vascular access
  • Places Vascular access device, (PICC, Midline, or ultrasound guided peripheral IV) or recommends alternate means of access
  • Assesses patient/family level of understanding and documents information on clinical records.
  • Obtains consent
Job Qualifications
Education
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing, Bachelors of Nursing (BSN) preferred
  • Successfully completed theoretical course with Didactic and supervised practicum
Experience
  • Minimum of two years prior acute care Registered Nurse experience required
  • Minimum of one year of experience or more caring for patient with central venous access devices
  • Competency in the placement of vascular access devices
Licenses and Certifications
  • Current CA R.N. License
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ALCS) within 6 months of hire
  • Vascular Access Board Certification (VA-BC) within one year of hire
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of principles, practices and current trends in health care and hospital system organization and administration sufficient to provide clinical management, leadership, coordination, and operational direction for assigned areas of responsibility

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $63.27 - $84.36 per hour
The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
