Job Overview


The Vascular Access Nurse provides vascular access assessment, planning, placement, and care for patients as assigned. The Vascular Access Nurse is a vascular access expert and serves as a clinical resource and partner to the care team in determining the most optimal vascular access device and plan to meet the patient’s needs. The Vascular Access nurse provides vascular access education and evaluation of interventions and outcomes.

Department: PICC and Vascular Access
Hours per week: 40, eligible for benefits
Shift: Three 12 hour shifts 0700-1930, work every third Saturday.

Qualifications


Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN)

Experience: Two years of pediatric or vascular access nursing experience

Certification(s): BLS/CPR from the American Heart Association with at least 6 months left before expiration is required upon hire; PALS required within six months of hire, VA-BC required within 2 years of hire.

Licensure: Current Registered Nurse (RN) license.

Responsibilities

Neonate - <30 days

Infancy - >30 days to 1yr

Toddlers - >1yr to 3yrs

Pre-Schoolers - >3yrs to 5yrs

School age - >5yrs to 13yrs

Adolescent - >13yrs to 18yrs

Adult - >18yrs to 65yrs


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all the following essential functions. These examples do not include all the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.

  • Demonstrates clinical proficiency regarding the insertion and care of vascular access devices.
  • Assesses patients with difficult access or need for long term intravenous (IV) therapy for appropriate vascular access device.
  • Partners with staff nurses, providers, case managers and other team members to ensure early assessment for vascular access device selection and implementation based on the patient’s plan of care.
  • Initiates appropriate education and instruction to patients and families, based upon evaluation to meet their learning needs.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert and provides consultation, education, and/or assistance to clinical care teams regarding management of vascular access devices.
  • Assesses patients and evaluates vascular access effectiveness, consulting with the clinical team to inform treatment and plan of care.
  • Participates in data tracking, ongoing assessment and process improvement to ensure quality in care and services.

Guidelines: Developmental, standard, or intermediate level. Guidelines are generally numerous, well established, and directly applicable to the work assignment. Work assignment and desired results are explained by general oral or written instructions.

Complexity: Falls between the entry and full performance/senior level. Duties assigned are generally repetitive and restricted in scope but may be of substantial intricacy. Employee primarily applies standardized practices.

Decision Making: Decisions or recommendations on non-standardized situations are limited to relating organizational policies to specific cases. Brings non routine issues to supervisor. Problems that are not covered by guidelines or that are without precedent are taken up with the supervisor.

Communications: Contacts with team members, clients or the public where explanatory or interpretive information is exchanged, gathered, or presented and some degree of discretion and judgment are required within the parameters of the job function.

Supervision Received: Under normal supervision, within a standardized work situation, the employee performs duties common to the line of work without close supervision or detailed instruction. Work product is subject to continual review.

Salary Information

Annual Salary Range (Based on 40 hours worked per week): $74,467.71 to $111,701.57
Hourly Salary Range: $35.80 to $53.70
