Job Description
Come join a creative and curious team dedicated to improving the lives of folks impacted by mental illness. We are the National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI), and produce software used by the 700 affiliate non-profits in our Alliance, doing on-the-ground work at the state and community levels. You will help shape our software, joining the team that designs, develops, and deploys systems that make this key work more successful. This role will primarily be working on systems which support our Alliance (which ranges from CRM, to event management, to a learning management system, and reporting tools). You'll be responsible for writing code that connects systems together, provide reporting dashboards and exports, and developing new features. You'll be a core member of our empathetic and engaged team of seven within Information Systems.

This position is grant funded, through August 2026, and will be re-evaluated at that time.

Salary Range: $70,000 - $75,000

This full-time position can be based in Arlington, VA (hybrid) or remote.

What You'll Bring

You need demonstrated professional experience with web or software development within a web framework. There's no specific educational background required. You want to build and maintain solid software, understand how our software works, and how we see it working well (or not!). And you want to partner with users to take individual asks and turn them into long-term iterative improvements. We want to build software that includes and integrates the diverse perspectives and experiences of our community members and makes software better.

Just as important as the technical skills, we're looking for someone who is optimistic, focused on getting the details right, building for accessibility, excited to learn new skills and new technologies, and enjoys working with other people on a cross-functional team.

In The First Year You'll Work On Projects Like

  • Enhancing Accessibility: One of the key projects for the first year would be to conduct a comprehensive accessibility audit of the software, and evaluate the tech capacity of the Alliance. The developer will identify areas for improvement and implement changes making our software more inclusive.
  • Revamping the Alliance Member Portal: The UX/UI Developer will work closely with the engineering team and alliance members to redesign the member portal. They'll conduct user research to identify pain points, streamline the user journey, and create an intuitive interface that enables easy access to resources, collaboration tools, and networking opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

User Experience (UX) Research & Evaluation: Collaborate with our team to understand user needs, conduct usability studies, and gather feedback to continuously improve the user experience of our software products.

User Interface (UI) Design: Create visually appealing and intuitive user interfaces that align with our nonprofit alliance's branding, ensuring a seamless and delightful user experience for our members.

Accessibility & Inclusivity: Champion accessibility best practices, ensuring that our software is inclusive and usable by people of all abilities, backgrounds, and demographics.

Front-End Development: Utilize your expertise in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to implement design solutions and enhance the functionality and performance of our web applications.

Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including developers, product managers, and content creators, to translate requirements into effective UX/UI solutions.

Continuous Improvement: Stay updated on industry trends and best practices, advocating for innovation and implementing new technologies to enhance our software's capabilities.
