Job Description


The Utah Department of Veterans & Military Affairs (DVMA) is searching for a key individual to manage our state veteran’s cemetery in Bluffdale Utah. You will supervise seven employees and will lead the effort to provide a well-manicured cemetery that honors veterans and supports approximately fifty interments a month.
Principal Duties
As the Veterans Cemetery Sexton, you will be responsible for:
  • Interment Operations – Ensure gravesite locations match the current gravesite layout plan and registry. Ensure gravesites are excavated properly. Ensure daily burial sites are properly groomed and marked each day by close of business.
  • Facility Maintenance – Cemetery buildings and infrastructure must be well maintained and functional.
  • Customer Satisfaction – Ensure the overall appearance of the cemetery honors veterans and the family members that we serve. Each day’s burial sites must be covered, initially groomed, marked, and made presentable for visitors before the close of business. Headstones, markers, and niche covers must be clean and free of debris. The daily maintenance activities must not detract from the dignity and solemnity of the cemetery.
  • Office Operation – Ensure good customer service. Ensure proper coordination with mortuaries and honor guards. Ensure records are maintained. Ensure that the National Cemetery Administration requirements are adhered to.
  • Headstones – Ensure headstones, markers and niche covers are ordered timely, placed correctly, and maintained.
  • Safety – Ensure cemetery facilities and infrastructure are maintained to avoid safety hazards for visitors and staff. Ensure necessary personal protective equipment and safety measures are always adhered to.
  • Equipment Maintenance – Cemetery equipment and tools must be properly cleaned, maintained, and accounted for.
  • Ground Maintenance – Maintain a Cemetery Grounds Maintenance Plan that includes all maintenance activities and schedules. Maintain and promote healthy turf that is generally weed free. Ensure the grounds are free of trash and debris. A complex irrigation system must be maintained.

The Ideal Candidate
The best person for this position will have:
  • Strong work ethic – The work is physical. Must be willing to work through adverse weather conditions.
  • Landscaping experience – Must have general knowledge, interest and experience with turf, tree, and shrub care. Must have knowledge and experience with irrigation system repair and maintenance.
  • Leadership/Management experience – Must be able to lead, manage and motivate a crew to accomplish detailed tasks in a timely and efficient manner while providing good customer service. Must be able to coordinate with mortuaries and plan appropriately for a smooth interment operation while at the same time manage the day-to-day maintenance of the grounds, facilities, and equipment. Requires attention to details. Must understand and adhere to National Cemetery Administration regulations for state veterans’ cemeteries.
  • Pride – Must take pride in serving veterans. The goal is to provide a well operated and manicured cemetery that honors veterans and their families.

Preferences
Preference may be given to those with at least one of the following:
  • Experience supporting or working with veterans and their families.
  • Public cemetery operation experience.
  • Knowledge of National Cemetery Administration Operational Standards and Measures
  • National or State Veterans Cemetery operation experience.
  • Heavy equipment operation experience.
Preference will be given to veterans and disabled veterans with an honorable discharge.

  • Physical Requirements: The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing, lifting heavy objects up to 50 pounds, crouching or crawling in restricted areas.
  • Working Conditions: Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around operating machines, working with hazardous chemicals, etc.
