The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado, is the nation's primary laboratory for research and development of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. An immediate opening for a part time (20 hours per week) Undergraduate Intern is available in NREL's photovoltaic performance and reliability team to develop and apply analyses of PV degradation modes to quantify losses due to different module materials, locations, and other factors. The candidate will work within a small group effort exploring ways to simplify the modeling and understanding of PV stressors for long-term performance and reliability. Specifically, the team is working to:
  • Reduce perceived risk arising from quickly evolving PV module technologies and materials otherwise untested by publishing detailed modeling for known degradation modes
  • Support the global PV industry with scalable, robust Python analysis tools that increase the easiness of evaluating different PV modules for various degradation modes at any location.
  • Highlight factors leading to system underperformance including module type and materials, climate, mounting configuration, etc.
This position will involve working with the open-source Python software that the team has developed (PVDegTools), along with custom analysis and reporting software (

Tasks include implementation of new analysis functionality (for example, creation and linking to a materials database, and more degradation modes additions), high-performance parallel computing deployment, participating in code reviews, and applying consistently scalable analyses to large data sets. This position will involve work on data sharing, quality assessment, degradation analysis, and aggregation and publication of data. A successful candidate for this role will work well on a collaborative team and have some familiarity with Python development or data analysis.

Basic Qualifications
Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD degree program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Additional Required Qualifications
  • Good technical writing, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Self-motivated problem-solver
  • Testing, debugging, and documentation of codebase
  • Demonstrated skills in Python programming for scientific computing, including Pandas, numpy, matplotlib, etc.
  • Collaborative development of sustainable, well-documented software with version control systems (e.g., git).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience analyzing PV modules and systems in real-world outdoor conditions and working with associated instrumentation and measurements (e.g., irradiance measurements)
  • Ability to understand and interpret PV system time-series performance data
  • Experience in photovoltaic system modeling, including PVLib, SAM, PVSyst, etc.
  • Experience in the field of photovoltaic reliability, material sciences, system O&M or design

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Undergraduate IV / Annual Salary Range: $33,200 - $53,100
NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
Benefits Summary

NREL employees may be eligible for, but are not guaranteed, performance-, merit-, and achievement- based awards that include a monetary component.
