Summary

The School of Information (UMSI) is launching a program to provide peer tutoring for students enrolled in:

SI 106 - Programs, Information and People

SI 206 - Data-Oriented Programming

SI 506 - Programming I

SI 507 - Intermediate Programming

SI 579 - Building Interactive Applications

UMSI is seeking applications for students interested in a job tutoring students in one or more of the courses listed above. Peer tutors provide assistance on a drop-in basis, by-appointment, or both. Tutors may work with individuals or small groups per session. Tutoring sessions may be remote or in-person depending on coverage needs.


UMSI Peer Tutors have the opportunity to use their skills and knowledge to help other students. Tutors help students build confidence as they enhance their understanding of course material and become more independent learners. UMSI Peer Tutors make a real difference in the lives of other students.


Responsibilities*

  • Are paid $25/hour to work part-time assisting other students with academic challenges
  • Retain and deepen course content knowledge
  • Develop an understanding of how students learn
  • Enhance interpersonal and communication skills
  • Learn skills and techniques useful for future careers

Required Qualifications*

  • Friendly, patient, and sensitive to a diverse range of students
  • Available to work one or more late afternoons and/or evening shifts on Mondays through Thursdays, and/or on Saturdays/Sundays, for approximately 3-6 hrs/wk (tutors set their own schedule in collaboration with the team).
  • Able to maintain confidentiality
  • Have completed, the UMSI Programming Sequence including 106/206 OR 506/507
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Responsible, dependable, honest, and mature
  • Earned a grade of A- or higher in the course(s) to be tutored
  • Exceptional understanding and enthusiasm for the course content

Please note that in keeping with the University's policies on conflict of interest, instructors teaching UMSI courses shall not give private tutoring or instruction for pay to students in any sections of the same courses that they are currently teaching or in which they are serving as course coordinator or assistant.
