Job Description
DEFINITION

The Language Assessment & Development Department at Pasadena Unified is currently seeking bilingual/biliterate translators/interpreters for a language other than English.
This posting is specifically for KOREAN fluent candidates only.
Current vacancies are on an on-call, as needed basis with no rights to permanency. Pay is based on the actual number of hours worked at $40/hour.
DEFINITION
Employees in this position shall perform simultaneous oral interpretation for the District and a wide variety of written translation, both to and from a language other than English.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SPECIAL LICENSE OR LANGUAGE SKILLS

Experience and Education
Education: Possession of an Associate (AA) degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university with course work in English and/or the foreign language, including basic language skills (grammar, syntax, punctuation, etc.) is required; Interpretation Certificate required; possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with course work in English and/or the foreign language, including basic language skills (grammar, syntax, punctuation, etc.) is desirable.
Experience: Three (3) years of experience in preparing written translations and experience with simultaneous oral interpretation to and from the language is required. Education beyond thee AA degree may be substituted for up to two (2) years of the required experience on the basis of thirty (30) semester units with course work in English and/or the foreign language, including basic language skills (grammar, syntax, punctuation, etc.) being equal to one (1) year of full-time experience.
Special License or Language Skills
A high level of proficiency and fluency in the designated language, and ability to translate effectively to and from English is required.
Other
Ability to type at least 40 wpm is preferred.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ensures materials are grammatically and idiomatically correct
  • Prepares rough and final typed copy of materials for reproduction/duplication and distribution.
  • Edits and proofreads translated documents.
  • Translates materials in the designated language into proper English.
  • Must use own computer software and deliver translated materials in current Microsoft Word format.
  • On behalf of the Board of Education, district management, offices at the Education Center and school sites, prepares initial and final copy of documents, letters, memoranda, handbooks, questionnaires, forms and instructions, translating from English into another language such as Spanish, Armenian, Chinese, Sign Language, etc., as required.
  • Edits materials to ensure that content and tone of translated materials accurately reflect that of the original document(s).
  • Perform simultaneous oral interpretation in desired target language for IEP's and various parent committees such as ELAC, PTA, etc.

Knowledge of:
  • English and the designated foreign language equivalent of general, technical and subject-matter terms.
  • Grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax and idiomatic usage of English and the designated foreign language
