Delivers critical and non-critical patient care services to all age groups using selected invasive and noninvasive techniques related to the cardiopulmonary system. Provides respiratory care predominately in critical care areas. In charge for the shift i.e. making out assignments, handles staffing issues, respond to personnel issues. Responsible for other duties as assigned.
Responsibilities
PATIENT POPULATION - (CLINICAL ONLY)
Engages in population appropriate communication. Has knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks. Gives clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment. Involves family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment and continuing care of the patient. Identifies any physical limitations of the patient and deploys intervention when necessary. Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems. Interprets population related data and plans care appropriately. Identifies and responds appropriately to different needs resulting from, unique psychological needs or those associated with religious / cultural norms. Performs treatments, administers medication or operates equipment safely. Recognizes and responds to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.
Direct Patient Care/Equipment/Supplies:
  • Performs and monitors patient progress and response to service. Assess patients and makes appropriate recommendations based on outcomes with regard to therapeutic interventions. Performs invasive and non-invasive therapeutic/diagnostic modalities. Procedure/services performed are according to department policy and procedure. Provides appropriate care per department P&P/algorithm for most efficient application of care. Adheres to Nation Patient Safety Goals (NPSG). Demonstrates the ability to apply theoretical knowledge to clinical situations. Addresses acute symptoms as well as maintenance needs. Works well with physicians to optimize patient care and to assure appropriately ordered care. Participates in patient rounds (if applicable). Effectively organizes work assignment. Appropriately sets up equipment. Troubleshoots/operates equipment safely. Ensures disposable supplies are current and available at patient care area. Changes equipment when due and removes dirty/defective equipment from patient care area.

Communication Written/Verbal:
  • Correctly records all information in the patient legal record and maintains department records. Hand-off of care performed using SBAR Model. All therapies, treatments and interventions, etc. are documented per department standard. Assessments/Reassessments are pertinent, informative and goal oriented. Department count completed to department expectation. Charges accurate and complete. Electronic Medical Record EMR) orders are current with therapy being provided. Provides a thorough, concise report and notifies co-workers of patient transfers.

Marketing:
  • Educates patients on their disease state, wellness, home care modalities and safety. Functions as a preceptor (works to provide a meaningful learning experience for orientees/students). Serves as an educational resource and willingly precepts students orientees and others. Distributes patient education materials. Educates patient on their disease state, wellness and home care modalities.

Leadership and Other Duties as Assigned:
  • Applies technical knowledge to consult with physician with regard to cardiopulmonary status. Acts as a resource. Supportive of leadership initiatives. Reviews workload to determine staffing needs and develops assignments for the on-coming shift. Reassess staffing during shift and checks on co-workers as time permits. In charge for the shift, i.e. organizes shift activities, handles personnel complaints, clinical issues, equipment needs, employee or patient accident process, staffing issues. Meets with managers to resolve outstanding issues. Supports RCPs when in charge, possesses the ability to handle problems in a prompt and fair manner and is a good resource. Respects and supports leadership initiatives. Promotes a positive and professional image both internal and external as a RCP. Willingly accepts responsibility when called upon and fulfills commitments. Demonstrates leadership through working relationships internal and external to the department, i.e. Core Teams, PPO, Unit Base Councils. Effectively utilizes downtime. Achieves goals from previous year. Treatments performed as related to age specific needs according to growth and development.


Qualifications
Education: Graduate of a two or four year AMA approved Respiratory Therapy program with RRT credentials.
Required Skills and Knowledge: Demonstrated knowledge of the growth and developmental needs of adolescent, adult, and older adult/geriatric client populations, the necessary clinical and technical skills to provide care for medically complex clients with chronic illnesses and physical disabilities. Assumes charge therapist responsibilities in the absence of a Lead Therapist.
Licenses and Certifications: Currently licensed to practice as a Respiratory Care Practitioner in the State of Ohio. BLS required, ACLS desired.
