Technician IV - Optical


The Optical Test Facility at Ball Aerospace provides optical component and system performance measurement support for the company. We are seeking an Optical Technician who has optical laboratory and optical system assembly experience. You will work with optics that will be integrated into complex optical sensors for various government and commercial markets.


What You’ll Do:

  • Generate data packages and reports of completed measurements using Microsoft Office and other software tools.
  • Bonding optics into support structures using a variety of adhesive materials
  • Basic dimensional measurements
  • Integrating other optical components into higher level assemblies
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Scatterometers
  • Perform cleaning of optical components per company processes and commercial standards
  • Scratch-Dig measurements
  • Abrasion / adhesion testing
  • Build custom optical measurement setups using engineering drawings and/or with guidance from leads.

  • Conduct inspection and cleaning of optical components, including:
    • Optical inspection per company processes and commercial standards
    • Scratch-Dig measurements
    • Abrasion / adhesion testing
    • Basic dimensional measurements
    • Vendor data package review
    • Perform cleaning of optical components per company processes and commercial standards
  • Vendor data package review
  • Spectrophotometers
  • Optical inspection per company processes and commercial standards
  • Integration of lenses into higher level assemblies using commercial lens alignment equipment
  • Supporting integration of optical components and subassemblies into payloads
  • Input required information into electronic build records in accordance with company processes.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.
  • Measure and test optical components and assemblies using a variety of equipment, including:
    • Interferometers
    • Spectrophotometers
    • Scatterometers
    • Measuring microscopes
    • Profilometers
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.

  • Assist with the general maintenance and housekeeping of the Optical Test Facility and associated equipment.


What You’ll Need:

  • Electronics aptitude is desirable.
  • Optical bonding experience is desirable.
  • Inquisitive self-starter, comfortable asking questions to ensure thorough understanding of assigned work prior to commencement of activities.
  • Knowledge of optical engineering fundamentals is desirable.
  • Working knowledge of optics measurement technologies and techniques.
  • Experience inspecting and cleaning delicate optical components
  • Experience working in cleanroom environments.
  • Hands-on experience with handling and splicing fiber optics isdesirable
  • Mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity for working with delicate optical and opto-mechanical hardware
  • Each higher-level related degree, i.e., Bachelor’s or Master’s, may substitute for two years of related experience. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
  • Optical lab, optical assembly, optical test setup, and optical alignment aptitude and experience.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Working knowledge and use of Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to perform work at all Ball Aerospace’s Colorado campuses (Boulder, Broomfield and Westminster) for extended periods is required.
  • Knowledge of lean six-sigma (6S) techniques and processes is desired.
  • Excellent collaboration skills and demonstrated ability to work with many different disciplines.
  • Ability to read and interpret optical component and subassembly drawings and specifications.
  • Hands-on experience in optical component characterization and integration for precision state-of the-art systems (such as Aerospace, lithography, science, or other high technology).
  • High School diploma or equivalent plus 6 years or more related experience or a related 2-year technical degree and 4 years or more related experience.
  • Space-based optical system experience is desirable.
  • Solid attention to detail and ability to follow detailed processes and procedures with consistency and rigor.
  • Experience operating optical measurement equipment, including interferometers and spectrophotometers, profilometers, scatterometers, lens alignment equipment, and measuring microscopes.


Full-Time On-Site Work Environment:
This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site full-time. Travel and local commute between Ball campuses and other possible non-Ball locations may be required.

  • Work is performed in an office environment, laboratory, cleanroom, or production floor.
