Description

For over 110 years, the Dumb Friends League has been working to end pet homelessness and animal suffering by providing a strong and steadfast voice for those who cannot speak for themselves. As the largest community-based animal welfare organization in the region, we care for more than 46,000 homeless pets and horses each year at our four facilities and are a national model in animal welfare. Purpose of Position: Deliver and support effective, safe and considerate animal experience through the League’s Population Management processes, including evaluation, transfer and internal movement components. Identify and implement best practices and together with the manager develop the future state of the Population Management team at the Malone Center.


Responsibilities


  • Oversee and coordinate training for new volunteers and support for all volunteers.
  • Perform euthanasia and related tasks as needed.
  • Manage communications with transfer partners, including sensitive, complex, and/or challenging conversations when necessary.
  • Support and ensure clear communication with all internal teams regarding population management activities and care of shelter animals.
  • Provide input to assist with development and management of department budget.
  • Use established SOPs to guide operating procedures. Provide productive feedback and propose edits as needed.
  • Coordinate the internal and external flow, movement and transfer of animals at League shelters, between League shelters and with partner agencies. Identify and coordinate opportunities to improve space usage for League animal populations and candidates to and from the League.
  • Utilize metrics to evaluate processes and create appropriate plans to maximize efficiency.
  • Safely handle, restrain, and move animals. This includes coordination and movement to address contagion concerns. Perform basic behavior and health evaluation to determine path of animal. Administer vaccinations and preventative medications.
  • Implement and oversee training for new staff and ongoing support for all staff.
  • Clean and sanitize work areas and vehicles.
  • Monitor data entry and documentation to ensure accurate, up to date animal records.
  • Provide onboarding support and training for new transfer partnerships and seek opportunities to strengthen and improve existing transfer partnerships.
  • Collaborate with leadership throughout the organization to address logistical issues related to flow, space, contagion and other shelter concerns.
  • Contribute to and lead initiatives to improve processes and procedures.
  • Refine and inform educational materials for internal and external use.
  • Effectively communicate with internal teams and external partners to ensure that local, state, and federal safety animal care and transport standards are met.
  • Partner with Facilities and others to ensure League equipment is in good working order.
  • Maintain and balance a Purchase card for vehicle and other travel expenses.

Schedule


  • Perform opening and closing duties weekly as needed by the organization, including at least two holiday shifts throughout the calendar year.


Compensation: $22.50-23.65 (starting pay commensurate with market, experience, and equity)

Work Conditions And Physical Requirements


Handle and restrain animals of various sizes, weights, and temperaments. Subject to animal bites or scratches. Work performed in high noise level areas. Exposure to cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, animal dander, and feces. Physical efforts require constant bending, stooping, standing, climbing stairs, and walking. Frequent lifting of animals and objects with reasonable accommodation. Ability to drive a League vehicle for the duration of a typical work day.

Required


  • Special Training, Certification and/or Licensure: Valid driver’s license and insurable driving record
  • Work Experience: Three years professional experience in animal welfare / sheltering
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent
