Teaching Artist (Part-Time)
Young Audiences New York (YANY) is actively seeking practicing artists with experience working with young people (K-12) for in-person, part-time contractual teaching positions at public schools and community-based organizations throughout New York City. We are looking for artists who specialize in one (or more) of the following artistic disciplines (those in bold are high-needs areas):
- Theater: Acting, Improv, Musical Theater, Puppetry, Storytelling
- Dance: African, Ballet, Contemporary, Creative Movement, Hip Hop, Jazz, Latin, Modern, Step, Tap
- Music: Band, Drums/Percussion, Guitar, Keyboard/Piano, Vocals
- Digital Media: Animation, Architecture & Design, Filmmaking, Graphic Design, Photography
- Visual Arts: Drawing, Painting, Mixed-media, Printmaking, Sculpture, Textiles
YANY’s Teaching Artists (TAs) provide exceptional arts education instruction to students by designing and facilitating multi-session arts residencies working in partnership with classroom teachers and school administrators to customize arts education curricula to meet the needs of the diverse student populations we serve. TAs demonstrate equal mastery in their art form and in educational practice by designing developmentally appropriate arts residencies that cultivate students into lifelong learners and appreciators of art. Teaching Artists report to YANY’s program staff.
Responsibilities
- Design and lead engaging, developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive arts residencies for young people
- Attend meetings, trainings, professional development workshops, and other program events as equested by program staff
- Attend planning meetings with partner schools and draft customized curriculum for each residency
- Sustain regular, thorough, timely, and professional communications with YANY staff
- Submit curriculum, photos, reflections, and any other required documents in a timely fashion
- Generate and submit supply orders for residencies from approved list of YANY vendors
- Enter biweekly timesheets
- Work in partnership with teachers and school administrators to plan culminating events
Competencies/Skills
- Understands classroom management as successful student engagement and has experience
- Brings creativity, flexibility, and joy to collaboration with students, schools, and YANY staff
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact authentically with diverse populations
- Experience meeting programming and administrative deadlines
- Implementing effective strategies, experience with Social-Emotional Learning practices a plus
- Ability to stage performances or mount exhibitions within 12 sessions
- (including NYC Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts)
- Experience designing innovative lesson plans that align curricula with educational standards
- Demonstrates a commitment to being a reflective practitioner
- Enjoys working with children and is passionate about their artistic development
- Effective time management and organizational skills
Qualifications
- Bilingual Spanish a plus, but not required
- In-school and after-school availability, with a minimum availability of 2 full days per week
- Bachelor’s Degree or proven experience working in K-12 settings
- Demonstrated expertise in an arts discipline through educational and professional accomplishments
- At least 2 years’ experience teaching art to young people
- DOE fingerprinting and background clearance (pre-employment)
- Willingness to travel to schools across the 5 boroughs, particularly the Bronx and Queens
Teaching Artist Pay: Starting instructional rate of $75/hour.
