Position Summary:
The Office of Planning, Analysis, and Institutional Research at the University of Alaska Fairbanks is recruiting for a Systems Interface Designer. In this position, you will serve as the primary expert on UAF’s enterprise-level Airtable installation and the primary designer of human-centric interfaces with numerous institutional systems. This position will frequently interact with a wide range of partners, including the Office of the Provost, and the Vice Provost, and the eCampus instructional design team, to support academic program review and faculty data management. Advanced knowledge of designing relational databases based on low-code software applications.
Ability to extrapolate abstract business problems into a successful targeted architecture benefiting UA.
Ability to make decisions on matters of significance and implement these
decisions on behalf of the University.
Strong knowledge of data structures and ability to efficiently query/transform data;
Ability to understand the needs of end users and articulate software architectures to capture and possibly redefine business requirements.
Advanced knowledge of information technologies including software, system administration, database development and administration, data and network security, programming, and system analysis and integration.
Proficiency with Macintosh and Windows operating systems, Internet, web browsers, file transfer protocols, filesecurity encryption, file compression and conversions, and content management systems.
Advanced knowledge of policies internal or external to the institution as they relate to the computing environment in higher education. Knowledge of FERPA and UA policies is expected.
Project management skills and highly self-motivated and self-directed, with an ability to bring enthusiasm and energy to foster a collaborative team environment;
Demonstrated experience working under pressure with frequent changes to reporting output in response to changes in reporting needs.
Ability to quickly learn and incorporate new technologies.
Excellent listening and interpersonal skills;
Ability to communicate ideas in both technical and user friendly language;
Strong negotiation, facilitation and consensus building skills;
Good oral and written communication skills as well as group presentation skills;
Ability to be considerate of and to be sensitive to human factors present in discussing data and performance measures with end-users.
Ability to think big picture and dive deep into details;
Excellent analytical, mathematical, and creative problem-solving skills, with keen
attention to detail.
Preferred
Proficiency in SQL, SAS, Microsoft Office Suite (or equivalents); on the job experience with relational database concepts and collaborative table design to support end user business processes;
Advanced knowledge of managing enterprise level technology
Ability to conduct research into data quality issues and outliers.
Ability to guide and mentor peers on tasks related to their area of expertise.

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (i.e. Information Technology, Computer Science,
Web Development, Graphic Design, or other related field) and 4 years experience, or an
equivalent combination of training and experience.
This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 81, based on education and experience.

The goal of a portfolio is to showcase specific interfaces built on low-code relational database software.
Successful candidates may have weaknesses in some areas that are outweighed by expertise in others. Successful portfolios are easy for users to navigate, include multimedia, and provide some descriptive context for the elements included. Portfolios are not meant to be comprehensive of an applicant’s work, but to highlight specific skills and abilities. The design of the portfolio is considered along with the content and applicants will be asked to present on their portfolio at the interview stage.
