Amazon is seeking a Systems Development Engineer to support the Amazon Logistics North America (AMZL NA) Material Handling Equipment (MHE) engineering team. This individual will challenge current processes, equipment, procedures, and electrical/controls specifications in our delivery stations, in order to come up with creative and implementable process improvement initiatives with more focus on in-house development with a focus on AB PLC/HMI development. This Systems Development Engineer will contribute to all aspects of an agile systems development life cycle including design, architecture, development, documentation, testing and operations. In addition, this position will be responsible for executing, scaling & managing the next generation of industrial control systems across all our delivery station processes, equipment, and operations. This is a unique opportunity to own new innovative projects that will advance the intelligence of our last mile business.


Key job responsibilities


  • Participate in design reviews for complex control systems, simulations, algorithms and software development owned by your team, partner teams and vendors
  • Develop and maintain controls software code/scripts for PLCs/HMI and vision systems
  • Understand material handling control systems, including Allen Bradley PLCs, IPCs , barcode scanners and industrial networks such as Ethernet, safety over ethernet IP.
  • Identify and implement process improvements which improve your team’s agility. This may include improvements to design, automation, development, test or operations.
  • Review new, advanced technology being introduced into the MHE systems with a focus on the control codes including electrical and controls interfacing requirements
  • Manage execution and scaling of the next generation of control systems across all our delivery station processes, equipment, and operations.
  • Develop, document and update design standards in conjunction with worldwide design teams, with emphasis on the electrical and controls design standards
  • Simultaneously manage multiple high-visibility projects and tasks while effectively influencing, negotiating, and communicating with internal and external business partners, contractors and vendors
  • Own the design and development of industrial controls design and PLC programs for complex material handling systems considering human/equipment interactions for the Amazon Logistics North America network
  • Define and/or refine system requirements, participate in the development and delivery of Interoperability-related features such as system health monitoring, diagnostics, repair, and other self-healing automation.
  • Influences within your team and partner teams to help drive and develop the technical implementation for overall system designs
  • Dive deep and works to help solve critical design issues involving algorithm, develop hardware/firmware interfaces, IoT interfaces, etc


A day in the life


Your work is very hands-on and multi-disciplinary. You will be working closely with vendors, cross-functional engineers, and project teams. You write and troubleshoot PLC code, documents, carry out testing, demonstrate proof-of-concepts, build prototypes, and support execution in conjunction with start-up managers.


Basic Qualifications


  • 2+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
  • 7+ years of administrative experience in networking, storage systems, operating systems and hands-on systems engineering experience
  • 1+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
  • Knowledge of systems engineering fundamentals (networking, storage, operating systems)
  • Experience programming with at least one modern language such as C++, C#, Java, Python, Golang, PowerShell, Ruby


Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience working in an Agile environment using the Scrum methodology
  • Experience with PowerShell (preferred), Python, Ruby, or Java

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $103,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $201,200/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
