Hiring Range: The base/starting wage for this position is $15.30 per hour, which increases based on years of service/experience.
Work Schedule: May work up to 40 hours a week with morning and/or night shifts required as assigned by an Aquatics Coordinator. Shifts may range from M-F, 8am-11am and/or M-Th, 5:30-7pm
NATURE OF WORK
As a member of the Parks, Recreation, and Culture Division, this position is responsible for instructing, supervising, and testing children and adults in Windsor’s learn-to-swim lesson programs. This position also helps organize and control classes under the direction of the Lead Guard and Recreation Coordinator - Aquatics.
Seasonal lesson instructors may work at both the indoor and/or outdoor pool. The outdoor pool may be open from Memorial Day until Labor Day.
This temporary employment may be scheduled through the year on a full-time basis depending on the needs of the town, but will not exceed six months in length (or 1,040 hours, whichever comes first).

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
The Swim Lesson Instructor may work under the direct supervision/leadership of the Lead Guard and/or Recreation Coordinator - Aquatics to carry out assigned duties, functions, roles, and projects in both routine and complex circumstances.
SUPERVISION/LEADERSHIP EXERCISED
No supervisory responsibilities or control exercised.


Essential Job Functions

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The Swim Lesson Instructor is assigned specific assignments, job duties, scope, authority, responsibility, roles and requirements as determined by the town, department, division, and pursuant to laws, regulations, and practices. Incumbents in this position must be able to successfully perform, be responsible for, and/or assist in the fulfillment of many job functions and duties, with or without reasonable accommodation. The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all-inclusive:

  • Enhance Windsor’s Parks, Recreation & Culture image by ensuring quality visits for guests by instructing, testing, and evaluating participants in the learn-to-swim program.
  • Schedules, Instructs, tests, and evaluates participants in private swimming lessons.
  • Write end-of-session report cards for all participants, either giving a passing or non-passing grade; provide feedback to participants.
  • Inspects classroom/program environment and equipment to ensure safety.
  • Submit class lesson plans, block plans, and other materials to be properly prepared to teach classes.
  • Ensure the safety of all participants in their swimming classes by safe and proper usage of equipment.
  • Utilize When2Work application for access to work schedules and time off requests.
  • Write and pass out first-day lesson cards to parents.
  • Communicates effectively with parents.
  • Arrives to work promptly to be ready to teach at the start of each class.
  • Sets personal appointments with clients according to their availability.
  • Performs related work as required and assigned.
  • Performs regular safety inspections of pools and equipment to reduce hazards and provide maximum safety to patrons.
  • Ensures adherence to safety regulations and procedures.
  • Disseminate and promote Parks, Recreation, and Culture program information and educate users of potential opportunities and services available.
OTHER DUTIES
Depending on organizational need, additional duties may include the following:
  • Assists other town departments/divisions, as necessary.
  • Performs related duties as established by law/ordinance or reasonably directed by the town.
  • Performs research as directed, such as discovering new technology or tools, market research, etc.

Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND FORMAL TRAINING

  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Previous experience in lifeguarding and/or teaching swim lessons preferred, but not required.
LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES
  • Must be able to complete the Town of Windsor’s Swim Lesson Training class and one complete session of co-teaching with a current instructor.
  • Current CPR, AED and First Aid certifications required within 30 days of hire.
  • Current Water Safety Instructor (American Red Cross) certification may be used as a supplement certification. Each WSI will be asked to complete the Town of Windsor’s Swim Lesson training and complete one session of co-teaching.

  • Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and goals of the Town of Windsor and the department.
  • Knowledge of blood-borne pathogens and how to properly dispose of them.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to handle reasonably necessary stress.
  • Ability to react quickly and accurately in emergency situations.
  • Ability to maintain composure during mentally, physically, and emotionally stressful situations.
  • Ability to perform the necessary functions of the position and to make appropriate decisions consistent with the job expectations and position description.
  • Knowledge of the Town of Winsor Aquatics Handbook.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate professionally, clearly, and effectively with people inside and outside the organization using verbal and written methods.
  • Ability to read, interpret and apply operating policies and procedures.
MATERIALS and EQUIPMENT USED
Materials and equipment used include, but may not be limited to the following:
  • Materials: Position requires the use of a variety of potentially hazardous chemicals for cleaning purposes and to maintain proper water chemistry.
  • Equipment: Position requires the use of a variety of equipment: computers, tablets or other digital equipment, digital cameras, copiers, printers, scanners, fax machines, telephones. Swimming toys, water aids, Rescue tubes, first aid equipment, personal protective equipment, and Automatic External Defibrillators.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to swim, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; climb a ladder. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Hearing and visual acuity must be sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job.

Work environment may consist of a normal outdoor pool environment with moderate to high levels of noise.
